The Senate is the University's senior academic body, responsible for academic policy, standards, and strategy.
The Senate is established by the University's Charter which states that "subject to the control and approval of the Council, [Senate] shall regulate and superintend the education and discipline of the University".
The powers, duties and membership of the Senate are set out in the University Ordinances (Ordinance 4 ). Membership is made up of ex-officio, and elected members, which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, and essentially reflects the Senate's role as the academic voice of the University and aligns with the University's faculty structure.
The Senate will normally meet four times each year, and during the 2025/26 academic session will meet on:
- 1 October 2025 at 14.00
- 19 November 2025 at 14.00
- 11 March 2026 at 14.00
- 1 July 2026 at 14.00
The Senate is supported by a number of sub-committees that oversee specific areas of academic governance, ensuring robust decision-making across the University's academic activities. The following sub-committees of Senate have been established to support its academic governance responsibilities:
- University Education Committee
- Recruitment and Admissions Committee
- Research Integrity, Ethics and Governance Committee
- Research, Innovation and Impact Committee
