Designated Accommodation for Welsh Speakers
Swansea University has announced an allocation of two new halls of residence for Welsh speakers and learners, Aelwyd Penmaen at Singleton Park Campus and Aelwyd Emlyn on the Bay Campus. Specific accommodation for Welsh speakers will be available in both halls from September 2018 onwards.
With thousands of Welsh speakers already studying at the University, and a growth in Welsh-medium study and provision, students will have the opportunity to be part of a close and supportive community in the heart of campus life.
The accommodation will also give students the opportunity to take full advantage of the social events that are being conducted through the medium of Welsh. Residents on both campuses will have access to all the essential facilities including a bank, laundry, shops, post office, food hall, health centre, Student Union, and the Swansea Branch from the Coleg Cymraeg.
Tomos Watson, Welsh Language Officer at the Swansea University Students' Union, said: "We welcome this development. University students have been calling for a hall that gives Welsh speakers the chance to live together for a long time, and, this year, our University not only has listened, but have arranged the accommodation for us! As a Union, we are now looking forward to welcoming new residents to these halls in September and to see this Welsh community developing."
