Academi Hywel Teifi supports the Swansea Inter-University Eisteddfod 2019
Academi Hywel Teifi is proud to welcome the Inter-University Eisteddfod to Swansea University on 1-2 March 2019.
The Inter-University Eisteddfod will be held on the University's Singleton Park campus over the St David's Day weekend and usually attracts over 400 Welsh-speaking students from all of Wales' universities. Academi Hywel Teifi, which promotes Welsh medium education and research and supports Welsh medium staff and students in Swansea University, has been supporting the team of Welsh-medium students who have been preparing for the Eisteddfod's visit to the Swansea. The Eisteddfod, which will start at 10am on Saturday 2 March, will include various competitions of the highest standard - both stage and homework competitions, including poetry and prose, art and science. There are also specific competitions for students who are Welsh learners. In addition to the Eisteddfod on the Saturday, there will be Inter-University sporting events held on Friday 1st March, including a rugby, soccer and netball tournament, and then to close the weekend there will be gig on Saturday night with some of the best Welsh-language bands - Candelas, Mellt and HMS Morris. Amongst the judges who will be adjudicating the students' work will be the Chaired poet Robat Powell, the editor and literary critic Bethan Mair, author Elin Meek, artist Rhys Padarn and scientist Dr Angharad Puw Davies. S4C Presenter Siân Thomas, a former student at Swansea University, will be one of the stage comperes, along with fellow TV presenter Mari Grug and Swansea Valley comedian Noel James.
The students who have been organizing the Eisteddfod have been using the new Swansea University crowdfunding website - Wave - to help raise money for staging the Eisteddfod and many local companies and organizations have contributed sponsorship, including Telesgôp media company, Castell Howell Foods, Tŷ Tawe, Menter Iaith Abertawe and Tŷ'r Gwrhyd. Pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera have designed the Chair, and the local glass artist Nikki Cass has created the Crown. The medals - including a new award which reflects one of the main areas of study of Swansea University, the Science Medal, have been created by local ceramic artist, Jess Harker.
Rebecca Martin, Swansea Students' Union Welsh Language Officer said: "All the arrangements are in place and we are really looking forward to the Eisteddfod. The Inter-University Eisteddfod will bring everyone together to celebrate and promote Welsh language culture in Swansea." Swansea University Students' Union is proud to support our Welsh speaking students and the Eisteddfod will be a great opportunity to network and socialise with students from all over Wales."
