Welsh-medium Developments in Occupational Therapy

From September 2025, the Occupational Therapy degree at Swansea University will offer 40 credits per year through the medium of Welsh - the only Occupational Therapy course in Wales to offer at least 40 credits per year in Welsh! Students who choose the Welsh-medium provision at Swansea University are now eligible to apply for the Coleg Cymraeg Incentive Scholarships and the University's Academi Hywel Teifi scholarships.

Occupational Therapy is a rewarding career which enables our students to make a real difference to people's independence and quality of life. Throughout the Occupational Therapy course, students will learn the skills to help people overcome difficulties caused by illness, disability, accidents, or ageing.

"We are extremely proud to be able to offer substantial provision through the medium of Welsh on our Occupational Therapy programme," said Alexander Smith, Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy. "Being able to offer 40 credits per year in Welsh is an exciting milestone - the first step in a strategic plan to expand the programme's Welsh-medium provision. One of the Welsh modules is based on a practical work placement, ensuring a direct impact on the use of the Welsh language in the health and social care sector - which is fully in line with the vision of Mwy Na Geiriau (More than Words)."

Dr Alwena Morgan, Welsh language Lead within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science and member of the Mwy na Geiriau advisory panel, added, "This development reflects Swansea University's strategy to strengthen the Welsh language in higher education, and contribute positively to Mwy na Geiriau and the Welsh Government's goals to create a culture of offering services in Welsh so that people can receive care, as equal partners, through the medium of Welsh. This is another step that represents our firm commitment to support Welsh speaking students, and to ensure that the health workforce of the future is able to provide quality bilingual services."

The new provision will be available to students starting the Occupational Therapy course in September 2025.
