Peer assisted study sessions (PASS)
CAS run the Peer Assisted Study Sessions scheme within certain modules across the University, in which we train students to act as facilitators, helping their peers to revise, consolidate and better understand material from their lectures. Typically, second-year students are trained as PASS leaders and will run sessions on a weekly basis through the academic year, usually to a group of around 6 – 12 students. We also run the scheme within postgraduate programmes, with entry points in both January and September.
All students are assigned a PASS group at the start of their course, and encouraged to attend. Sessions are usually aligned to one particular module and are organised around the students’ timetables to maximise the possibilities of attendance.
Leaders gain key leadership and facilitation skills, while students increase their sense of belonging and community, as well as having a structured environment in which to revise the material. Students have reported finding the scheme beneficial to their learning, and report that it has increased their confidence in a subject.
