The Centre for Academic Success runs a programme for PhD students wishing to gain some paid experience delivering academic writing support. Students are trained and given a set number hours each week to run individual writing appointments.

Training typically occurs in June, in preparation for the coming academic year. If you supervise any PhD students you feel may be interested in this paid opportunity to gain experience providing support, please contact Elizabeth Tanguay: e.tanguay@swansea.ac.uk

The training

This course is suitable for current postgraduate research students at Swansea University who are interested in gaining paid employment with the Centre for Academic Success as a Peer Writing Advisor. It focuses on the skills, techniques and processes required to successfully hold 1:1 academic writing appointments with undergraduate students.

Do you want to improve your writing skills and gain experience in advising others? The Peer Writing Advisor scheme can offer you the opportunity to:

  • Undertake free writing advisor training recognised by Swansea University Postgraduate Research Office
  • Develop and reflect on your own pedagogy – useful for HEA Fellowship applications
  • Improve your own writing
  • Enhance your employability record and gain the skills to articulate these skills to future employers
  • Gain an awareness of student services for use in teaching and beyond
  • Join a community of paid writing advisors at Swansea University

Syllabus

Training will include the necessary knowledge base, 1-to-1 teaching methodology, and develop your pastoral skills and ability to signpost to specialist services when relevant. The course is delivered by lecturers from The Centre for Academic Success. The training supports the Swansea University PGR Training Framework theme "teaching and demonstrating".
