What is an Honorary Award?

An Honorary Award is one of the highest accolades that our University can bestow. Honorary Awards are presented to individuals to recognise outstanding contributions to their field - whether through major academic achievements, exceptional service to our University, or remarkable accomplishments in their own areas of work. These awards are typically presented to outstanding individuals at our Degree Ceremonies each year.

Why make a nomination?

We would like to recognise the exceptional individuals who are making a meaningful impact both globally and locally, in our communities—those who inspire you to learn, teach, research, and achieve your goals. If someone comes to mind, we would love to hear about them!

We welcome nominations from all current Swansea University staff members, alumni, Council & Senate members along with current Honorary Fellows.

Please note that all nominations should remain completely confidential and it is critical that a nominee is not made aware of a nomination prior to it being approved.

Who we recognise & why

We are eager to receive nominations about those who have made an outstanding contribution to:

  • Welsh history, heritage or culture
  • Sport
  • The field of STEM
  • The city and the region
  • The business sector, public sector, or third sector
  • Health, wellbeing and social care
  • Arts and music

We are also committed to recognising:

  • Swansea University alumni
  • Former staff or committee members
  • Supporters who have contributed their time, treasure and talent to our University

The Nomination Process

Nominating someone for an Honorary Award at Swansea couldn't be simpler. All current Swansea University staff, alumni, Council & Senate members along with Honorary Fellows are invited to submit nominations. Nominations can be made at any point during the year and must be submitted online using this digital form, with all mandatory fields filled in fully. Please note that the nomination process is confidential. Here's how it works:

Step 1

Identify the person you'd like to nominate and clearly outline why they're deserving of the award.

Step 2

Submit your nomination form which will then be considered by the Honorary Awards Committee.

Step 3

If successful, the nomination will be considered by Council & Senate for final approval.

Step 4

Following approval, the Vice-Chancellor will write to your nominee and invite them to receive their Honorary Award.

Eligibility

When nominating individuals for an Honorary Award, please note that nominations cannot be made for:

  • current members of staff
  • serving members of University Court or Council

While people linked to business and other organisations working with the University will not be excluded, the Honorary Awards Committee will be mindful of the need to avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest. 

We encourage nominations so that our Honorary Award recipients reflect the diversity of our university community. We currently have an under-representation of women and ethnic minorities within this group and would particularly welcome applications from these underrepresented groups. Appointments will always be made on merit.

Nomination Form Guidance

When filling out a nomination form, remember the Honorary Awards Committee may not know the nominee as well as you do. This is your chance to tell us about them and really elaborate on their achievements. The most successful nominations will be those that provide the detail needed to really showcase the nominee's character and successes, and outline how they would complement the work of our University. It is important that your application reflects your enthusiasm for nominating and recognising them.
