Since 2010, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Baroness Grey-Thompson, DBE DL, has been an independent Crossbench peer in the House of Lords. This appointment followed her outstanding dedication and commitment to sport as both a wheelchair racer and an advocate for disability rights. Throughout her time as an athlete, Tanni participated in five paralympic games, earning a total of 16 medals: 11 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze. As a parliamentarian, Tanni continues to champion the equal rights and welfare of disabled individuals, as well as women and girls.

She also sits on the Board of the British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR). Previously, Tanni has also held seats on the boards of Transport for London (TFL), the BBC, the LLDC (London Legacy Development Corporation) and the Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC).
