Dr. Barry Morgan, who has been an Honorary Fellow of Swansea University since 2009, served as Archbishop of Wales for nearly 14 years and Bishop of Llandaff for 17 until his retirement in 2017.He had previously been Bishop of Bangor for seven years.
Born in Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, South Wales, he gained a history degree from University College London in 1969; a theology degree from Selwyn College Cambridge in 1971, and in 1986, a Doctorate from the University College of North Wales Bangor as it was then called. He trained for the ministry at Westcott House Cambridge. He has worked in a range of ministerial contexts; in parish ministry, as a university and theological college lecturer and university chaplain, as an Archdeacon, Director of Ordinands and as a Continuing Ministerial Education Officer. He served on the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches and the Primates’ Standing Committee of the Anglican Communion. He has published a number of articles and books, including a study of the work of the Welsh poet R S Thomas. He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, was Pro Chancellor of the University of Wales from 2006 -23, and is a Fellow of several other Welsh Universities, two of which have given him honorary doctorates.
He has served as President of the Welsh Centre for International Affairs, Chaired an enquiry on behalf of Shelter Cymru on homelessness in Wales, Chaired the Standards and Ethics Committee of Cardiff City Council and is a Knight of the Order of St John. In July 2020 he was appointed as a Commissioner of the Judicial Appointments Commission responsible for the appointment of Judges and Tribunal members in the United Kingdom.
