Alumni Volunteering: Celebrating Success Stories
At Swansea University, we are proud to have a vibrant community of alumni who volunteer their time and expertise to support our current students.
Through our Professional Mentoring Programme, many of our alumni have played a vital role in helping students navigate their academic and career paths. We are thrilled to share some of the success stories from the last year, which are a testament to the positive impact of alumni volunteering.
After taking part in the programme Gabriela achieved her goal of gaining a Scientific Internship at Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
“I have had an excellent experience with the mentoring programme so far, and I've gained valuable insights and skills related to my career goals. My mentor has been incredibly supportive throughout the process, providing me with constructive feedback and guidance that has helped me to refine my CV and cover letter. Additionally, they have given me valuable insights into life in the industry, which has helped me to feel more confident about my future prospects.”
“The Alumni Mentoring Program has been really exciting for me as a mentor, as I have been able to see the mentees I have been matched with gain confidence from the first session to the last. As a mentor, my role is to ask the open questions, getting to know the mentee and to assist them in working through the next steps towards their goals. Sometimes I am able to comment on my experiences, and offer advice, but often the answers are available via self-exploration for the mentee.
I have been privileged to support a number of mentees through the scheme, and every time has been different, but the outcome in terms of mentee confidence and my passion in seeing the mentee develop has been the same.”
