The Biosciences Department at Swansea University is based at the Singleton Park Campus. At undergraduate level, we offer courses in biology, zoology and marine biology. These courses are all accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. Our research covers behavioural and movement ecology, evolutionary and molecular ecology, fisheries and aquaculture, population and community ecology, whole organism biology and wildlife diseases and pest control. We collaborate with local, national and international organisations to work on projects that help to improve life below water and life on land.
Swansea is a fantastic location to study biosciences. Diverse habitats are located on the nearby Gower Peninsula (a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), in the Swansea Valley and further afield in the Brecon Beacons National Park and Pembrokeshire. We have a new £1.3 m purpose-built catamaran research vessel which will carry 26 passengers and allow all of our student and researchers to carry out activities in Swansea Bay and further afield.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 94% of the Department's research was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. It was ranked 7th in the UK and top in Wales.
