Job title: Research Officer-Algal Research

My role: My role focuses on developing research and innovation partnerships in algal biotechnology — exploring how algae can be used to address industrial and environmental challenges. I work with companies to design R&D projects that turn algal science into practical solutions, from carbon capture and wastewater remediation to sustainable agriculture and bio-based materials.

Bio: I have worked at Swansea University since 2010, specialising in applied algal biotechnology. My research spans large-scale algal cultivation for bioremediation, biomass production, and the extraction of high-value compounds such as fatty acids, pigments, and proteins. I began my scientific career in Ukraine as an algal taxonomist, later completing a PhD in marine biotechnology and chemistry in France, and undertaking postdoctoral research in Malaysia on microalgae for aquaculture and environmental applications.

At the NP BioHUB Green Economy Centre, my work bridges academia and industry to develop environmentally friendly technologies that turn waste into resources and create cleaner, greener industrial systems. I collaborate with partners across sectors — from agriculture and aquaculture to heavy industry — to accelerate the adoption of algae-based solutions and expand Wales’s growing green economy.

Job title: Senior Lecturer in Biosciences

My role: My role focuses on uncovering bioactive natural products from fungi and exploring their potential applications across food, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries. I work to identify new compounds, understand their biosynthetic pathways, and investigate how fungi use these molecules to survive and interact within complex microbial ecosystems.

Bio: I am a fungal biotechnologist and natural products chemist with research interests in the discovery and characterisation of secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi. My work aims to reveal how fungi evolved in competitive environments, such as the symbiotic systems of leaf-cutter ants, to produce unique bioactive compounds with potential use in medicine, agriculture, and industry.

Using a combination of molecular genetics, analytical chemistry, and metabolomics, my group investigates how these metabolites are synthesised and regulated — and how they can be harnessed for sustainable innovation.

At the Natural Products BioHUB, my research contributes to understanding the ecological roles of fungal metabolites and their application in biocontrol, bioengineering, and green chemistry. I am also passionate about developing new genetic tools to unlock previously inaccessible fungal biosynthetic pathways, helping to expand the discovery pipeline for natural products that could address global challenges such as antimicrobial resistance.

Job title: Professor in Marine Microbiology

My role: My work focuses on understanding the microbial ecosystems that surround microalgae and microplastics, with the aim of developing sustainable, nature-based biotechnological solutions. I investigate how microorganisms interact with algae and marine pollutants, and how these relationships can be harnessed to promote cleaner, more resilient environments.

Bio: I am a marine microbiologist with expertise in microbial ecology, biochemistry, and biotechnology, exploring the complex relationships between microalgae, bacteria, and microplastics in marine systems. My research seeks to uncover the fundamental principles of these interactions — from how microbial communities shape algal health and productivity, to how they colonise and transform microplastics.

Microalgae contribute to nearly half of global carbon fixation and hold immense potential for biotechnological innovation, including applications in bioremediation, sustainable production systems, and climate mitigation. Through my work, I aim to integrate microalgae into scalable biological production systems and uncover microbial processes that support a cleaner marine environment.

Alongside my research, I am committed to teaching microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, inspiring the next generation of scientists to explore the microbial world and apply molecular and computational tools to real-world sustainability challenges.
