One of our core strengths is the visualisation and analysis of animal movement data, particularly multi-dimensional, high-frequency data from animal attached technology. This has been hugely enhanced by our state-of-the-art imaging facility, funded by a Royal Society Wolfson Laboratory refurbishment grant. The facilities include a computer cluster capable of processing large volumes of data, an array of high definition screens for data visualisation, and an electronics laboratory for the development of animal-attached technologies.
We continue to develop animal tagging techniques, from the sensors deployed on animals, to metrics that inform ecologists about animal motion and its energetic costs (notably through DBA), and methods of tag attachment. This builds on Rory Wilson's long history of developing tagging technologies, which stretch back to some of the first depth sensors deployed on diving birds, the development of light-based geolocation, dead reckoning and more recently, the demonstration that acceleration metrics can be powerful proxies for the activity-specific metabolic rate in wild animals.
Our Daily Diary tags are now available to the wider community throughout the spin-out company, WildByte Technologies: http://wildbytetechnologies.com/tags.html
