We are pleased to announce that we are a University of Sanctuary!

Swansea University has been awarded University of Sanctuary status for the welcome and support it offers to people displaced from their homes by conflict.

Universities of Sanctuary is a national network working to make higher education institutions places of safety, solidarity and empowerment for those seeking sanctuary.

In May 2010, Swansea became the second official City of Sanctuary within the UK, signing up to the national movement committed to building a culture of hospitality for those seeking sanctuary from war and persecution.

As well as encouraging local businesses and organisations to welcome people seeking sanctuaries into their activities, City of Sanctuary also runs the Better Welcome to Swansea mentorship scheme. Volunteers promote integration into the community, building confidence and reducing isolation.

Swansea University declares that it publicly supports the Swansea City of Sanctuary Vision and the City of Sanctuary charter. We pledge to take action to contribute to the vision becoming a reality and create a welcoming and safe place for those fleeing violence and persecution.

We have for many years worked to enhance the experience of all those seeking refugee and asylum in our university and the wider community through the work of our student and staff volunteers. Our research community contribute to researching and improving the refugee and asylum seeker experience.

We value the contribution of those seeking sanctuary and will embed their voices in our work. We will work continue to build stronger ties with organisations across our community through the work of our students, staff and the university as an organisation.
