Abstract:
Redefining Digital Engagement: Notifications and Productivity:
Today’s digital environment challenges us to manage constant interruptions effectively. This talk explores the design and impact of digital notifications on productivity and focus. By combining various research methods, including lab experiments, observational studies, and online crowdsourcing studies, we identify ways to make notification designs more effective for maintaining focus. The talk covers three main topics: 1) Modifying smartphone call notifications to minimize disruption, 2) Introducing TimeToFocus, a tool providing feedback on interruption durations for improved focus, and 3) Investigating how 'on call' demands in the gig economy affect worker flexibility. This research aims to help us use technology in a way that enhances, rather than hinders, our professional and personal lives.
