The ‘Words that Burn’ project is an exciting new initiative focusing on Human Rights education for Key Stage 3 pupils in South Wales, including Llangatwg Community School, Y Pant Comprehensive School, St John Lloyd Catholic Comprehensive School, Whitchurch High School, Tonyrefail Community School, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, and Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur.

A major new programme of DylanED outreach activities generously funded by the Rhys Davies Trust in collaboration with Amnesty International UK (AIUK), the project aims to empower young people to learn about human rights and feel valued as poets and change makers.

Students from all seven participating schools crafted and honed incredibly insightful, personal, and thought-provoking poems in a series of powerful workshops led by Dr Elaine Canning (Director, Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize / DylanED) and Swansea University English Literature and Creative Writing students Shreya Thokala; CJ Wagstaff; Tomos Lewis, Kimi Tustin; and Rachel Taylor-Beales.

'Words that Burn' Showcase 2025

A stunning showcase of the selected created works took place at Swansea's wonderful National Waterfront Museum on Tuesday 13th May. With over 250 students from the seven schools in attendance, the main gallery echoed and reverberated to the words from each impassioned writer's poem as they proudly read them aloud for all gathered to reflect on.
