The University of New Brunswick (UNB) is located in Fredericton the capital of New Brunswick, on Canada’s eastern coast.  New Brunswick is not far from Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the US border.  UNB is home to two beautiful and unique campuses, exchange students can choose which campus best suits you: Saint John or Fredericton. Average temperatures are around 26 Celsius in summer and minus 16 Celsius in winter, with snow lying from December to April. UNB offers excellent programs with a small university experience to ensure students get the support that they need. With over 120 clubs, societies and residences offering students the chance to take part in intramural sports there is something to keep you busy outside your studies.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

Who can study here?

Swansea has a ‘university-wide’ partnership with this university which means that it is open to all subject areas except for American Studies, Education, Early Childhood Studies, Social Policy or Law. 
Spaces are not guaranteed, can be limited and all students on a semester/year abroad programme are subject to a university-wide, competitive selection process.

Important information

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs September to April. 

COSTS: The average cost of living per month in New Brunswick will vary depending on the type of accommodation and meal plan you select.  New Brunswick have estimated living expenses on their webpage. 

VISA: You will need a Study Permit and will be required to provide financial evidence of at least CAN$20,635 (subject to change). The Study Permit application fee is approx. CAN$150. Your host university will provide you with more information about the application process. You must allow enough time to complete the study permit application and for your study permit to be processed and sent to you. The process can typically takes three months however, there can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to Canada without it.

ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation is available but not guaranteed at the University of New Brunswick (UNB).  On-campus accommodation typically requires you purchase a meal plan. Information on housing options at the UNB can be found here.

HEALTH INSURANCE: You will be required to purchase mandatory international health insurance for your time at UNB.  More information will be provided on acceptance.
