Student experiences at Diakonia-Ammattikorkeakoulu

Romany spent 1 semester (2019) studying in Finland as part of her nursing degree at Swansea University. Here are some of the comments she made about her experience:

"I chose to study abroad as part of my degree because I have always aspired to travel the world with a purpose. My aspirations are eventually to become a humanitarian nurse and work within refugee camps and third world countries...I chose to work and study abroad because I wanted to experience nursing from another walk of life, to allow me to compare different ways of nursing and to expose me to a whole new range of clinical skills."

New Skills

"I have developed many new clinical and social skills as well as developed upon existing ones. I underwent 10 weeks of clinical placement and was able to partake in the nursing of patients within Finnish guidelines and procedures. We were trained to cannulate and to take bloods off patients; this is an opportunity that the Nursing Midwifery Council do not provide to Welsh students. I had plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get hands on, I am a kinaesthetic learner, so this benefited me greatly and I was able to understand why procedures were being performed and their pathways."

Favorite Memory

"We stayed in the ice hotel which was Game of Thrones themed at the beginning of our trip. I remember walking outside and there was no sound. The trees were covered in pure white, glistening sheets of snow. The air was so crisp and fresh and easy to breathe in. I remember the feeling of complete serenity and gratitude that I had at that moment."
