Rennes 2 University is situated in Rennes, the capital city of Brittany in western France, less than an hour from the coast and 1.5 hours from Paris by train. It is the largest centre for research and higher education in arts, literature, languages, humanities and social sciences in western France and its strong academic reputation in these areas make it an excellent choice for those studying English to go on exchange. It is a multi-campus university made up of 3 campuses, and you will be based on the Villejean campus, the largest of the three. The University is rich in arts and culture, in particular the Villejean campus, which has many cultural sites and hosts a rich programme throughout the year. Students should have a B2 level in French however a minimum B1 level is required. Students who have a B1 level will need to attend French proficiency evening courses. One semester of French evening support courses in the CIREFE (4h/week, 6 ECTS) is offered to exchange students.
It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs September to April.
COSTS: The cost of living in Rennes will depend on your choice of accommodation and lifestyle. Rennes 2 estimates the monthly cost of living in their downloadable information sheet.
VISA: You may need to apply for a long-stay visa (more than 90 days) to study in Rennes 2 and you will be required to provide proof of sufficient funds as part of the application. The fee for the visa application is 99 EUR. Rennes 2 will provide further information on the visa application process and you can also visit the French Government webpage. You must apply for the visa early to allow plenty of time for your application to be processed ahead of your arrival in France. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to France without it.
ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation at Rennes is in high demand so you should start your search as early as possible. You are encouraged to ask for a room in a residence hall, as it is very difficult and expensive to find a room in Rennes. You can request a room when completing the application form however rooms are not guaranteed and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
HEALTH INSURANCE: In France, health insurance is free and compulsory for everyone. This social security regime is managed by the Caisse Primaire d'Assurance Maladie (CPAM). Social security reimburses you for your health expenses. You must register with the French student social security system to benefit from the same protection as French students. All registered students are provided with access to effective health and social services at the Student Health Centre at Rennes 2.
