Japan is an island nation in East Asia, with Tokyo as its capital and largest city. Japan is one of the world’s largest economies, a leading exporter in automotive, electronics, robotics, and precision machinery, and plays a major role in global trade and finance. The country consists of four main islands (Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku) and the overall population is roughly 123 million.

ACADEMIC YEAR: The academic year is in reverse to the UK, starting in semester 2 and finishing after semester 1. You will start around the end of September and finish in early August.

VISAS: You may need a student visa for your stay in Japan, please refer to the Study in Japan Government webpage for further details. You will receive more details upon acceptance at your host university. More information is available via our visa and study permit webpage. There can be delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to Japan without it.

HEALTH INSURANCE: You may need to enrol in Japan's National Health Insurance (NHI) programme to study in Japan. This will provide students with access to necessary medical services.
