Louisiana State University is a designated land grant, sea-grant and space-grant institution, noted for its extensive research facilities. There are over 350 student organizations active at LSU, including a student government and a total of 38 fraternities and sororities. The Daily Reveille, LSU’s student newspaper, employs more than 80 students each semester in jobs ranging from writing and editing to design and illustration.

LSU fields teams in 21 varsity sports and is a member of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and the South-eastern Conference. LSU Athletics is represented by its mascot, a live Bengal tiger named Mike the Tiger, whom resides in a new $3 million Mike the Tiger habitat, created in 2005. Sporting events take place in Tiger Stadium, nicknamed Death Valley, which is legendary for the incredible crowd noise generated by fans. Death Valley holds 102,321 fans and the atmosphere is considered one of the most electrifying college football experiences in the country. Located only an hour and a half from New Orleans time spent studying at LSU is sure to be an exciting and novel experience.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

Who can study here?

This university is not open to Swansea University students for exchange in 2025/26.

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs August to May. 

COSTS: The cost of living in Louisiana will vary depending on your chosen accommodation and your lifestyle. 

VISA: You will need a J-1 exchange visa and will be required to provide financial evidence of approximately US$24,132 for the year based on the 2023-24 academic year (subject to change). To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an appliction fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it.

ACCOMMODATION: On-campus accommodation is recommended, and usually includes a meal plan. 

HEALTH INSURANCE: You will be required to purchase mandatory health insurance for your time at LSU. They will provide more information on acceptance.
