New Mexico State University sits on a 900-acre campus, it is a public land grant and NASA space-grant college flagship, classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an "R-2 Doctorate-granting University - with higher research activity". The prestigious marching band of NMSU is known for its public performances, providing entertainment for college events, at the London New Year’s Day parade and dozens of NFL halftimes. They are the pride of New Mexico and collectively include around 200 musicians, dancers and auxiliary. Before every NMSU football game, fans await for Smoki the Wonder Dog, the University mascot and Border collie, to retrieve the kicking tee from the football field.

The weather varies depending on the time of year, so ensure you pack warm winter clothes and cool cotton clothes for the summer. Don’t forget to try some of the local restaurants offerings a wide variety of multi-cultural cuisine and take a trip to one of the various museums, (ranging from historical, cultural and even technological) and naturally beautiful sites found within the state.  

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

This university is not open to Swansea University students for exchange in 2025/26.

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs August to May. 

COSTS: The cost of living will vary depending on your chosen accommodation and your lifestyle. 

VISA: You will need a J-1 exchange visa and will be required to provide financial evidence as part of the application.  
To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an application fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it.
