The University of Utah is a public research university in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The university ranks among the top 50 U.S. institutions by total research expenditures, the 12th most ideologically diverse university in the country. Salt Lake City is the capital and the most populous municipality of the state of Utah. The university is located in a large metropolitan area, but many students live in the neighbourhoods immediately surrounding the university. Salt Lake City has a thriving and vibrant festival culture. Various festivals happen throughout the year, celebrating the diversity of the communities in the Salt Lake Valley. From culture, food, religion and spirituality, to dance, music, spoken word, and film, almost any type of festival can be found, many of which have been ongoing for decades.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

Swansea has a ‘university-wide’ partnership with this university which means that it is open to all subject areas except for Social Policy or Law.
Spaces are not guaranteed, can be limited and all students on a semester/year abroad programme are subject to a university-wide, competitive selection process.

Important information

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs August to May. 

COSTS: The cost of living in Utah will vary depending on the type of accommodation and meal plan you select. For visa purposes, you will be required to provide financial evidence for a specific amount. Further details are below.

VISA: You will need a J-1 exchange visa and you will required to provide financial evidence of at least US$19,020 for the year based on the 2023-24 academic year (subject to change.) Once accepted, the University of Utah will send you a DS-2019 (your visa document) and a letter of admission to the university. You will need both of these documents to apply for your J-1 exchange visitor visa. 

To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an application fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be processed and sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it.

ACCOMMODATION: All exchange students are required to live on-campus at Utah.  A space will be reserved for you through the Office of Housing and Residential Education (HRE), according to the preferences listed on your exchange application. More information on housing at Utah can be found here.

HEALTH INSURANCE: All international exchange students will automatically be enrolled in the University of Utah Student Health Insurance Plan administered by United Healthcare. The cost of this health plan can be found on the Utah's Student Health Center webpage

IMMUNISATIONS: You will also need to provide evidence of when you received 2 MMR vaccines or the dates of when you received (2) Measles, (2) Mumps and (1) Rubella Vaccine and one of the approved COVID-19 vaccines. More information about health insurance and immunisations at Utah can be found here.
