Washington State University (WSU or Wazzu) is a public research and land-grant university in Pullman, Washington. The Pullman campus of WSU is 620 acres, based in the Palouse region. The University is ranked among the top 5 safest colleges in America, and boasts a low student-faculty ratio of 15:1. WSU’s athletic teams are called the ‘Cougars’ and their mascot is ‘Butch T. Cougar’ so show your support for them by wearing their colours, crimson and grey.

The university has a160,000-square-foot Student Recreation Centre (SRC), which was the largest in the United States when it was opened in 2001. The SRC includes elevated indoor running tracks, four basketball courts, two volleyball courts, roller hockey rink, four racquetball courts, swimming pool, 50-person Jacuzzi, a ropes course, a 7,305-yard championship golf course and various exercise and fitness equipment. Pullman's climate is classified as dry-summer humid continental, which typically experiences warm, dry summers followed by cold, snowy winters with short transitional seasons in between. Pullman averages 21 inches of precipitation throughout the year.

It will not be possible to complete a year abroad at this University if you have any assessments, such as supplementary or deferred exams, during the August assessment period at Swansea University.

Swansea has a ‘university-wide’ partnership with this university which means it is open to all subject areas except for Classics, Education, Early Childhood Studies, Social Policy or Law.

Important information

ACADEMIC YEAR: Runs August to May.

VISA: You will need a J-1 exchange visa and will be required to provide financial evidence of at least $24,522 based on the 2023-2024 academic year. (subject to change)  Your host university will provide you with more information about the application process.

To apply for a visa, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of approx $220 plus an application fee of approx $185. In addition, you should factor in the cost of attending a visa interview at the US Embassy (typically in London). You must allow enough time to complete the visa application and for your visa to be sent to you. There can be significant delays so please do not leave this until the last minute as you cannot travel to the USA without it.

ACCOMMODATION: All exchange students are required to live in University housing

HEALTH INSURANCE: You will be required to purchase mandatory health insurance for your time at WSU.
