The Climate Action Research Network (CARN), led by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, exists to promote interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary climate action research. Our aim is to support researchers to explore the human dimensions of climate change from social, cultural, artistic, and behavioural perspectives.
Addressing the climate and biodiversity crises requires engaging with human and societal impacts and agency, in dialogue with science and technology. Working closely with the Climate Action Research Institute (CARI) based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, CARN provides a bridge between arts, humanities, and social sciences research and climate research in the other faculties.
What We Do
CARN facilitates collaborations between researchers to develop new approaches to addressing the interlocked crises of climate change, biodiversity and pollution. We also work with external partners for action on the climate crisis. CARN’s research clusters are dynamic and reflect emerging challenges and the research synergies of its members. Who We Are
Director - Professor Kirsti Bohata
Kirsti Bohata is a Professor of English Literature specialising in Welsh writing in English. She has published on postcolonial, queer, disability and place-based approaches to literature. Professor Bohata leads the interdisciplinary Narrating Rural Change Network, and recent research includes using co-design of games to develop understanding and action on the climate and biodiversity crises (funded by AHRC) and a collaborative project climate scientists and artists called Climate Lab (funded by NERC and MASI).
Director - Dr Jennifer Rudd
Dr Jennifer Rudd is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainability at Swansea University, specialising in climate change education and the circular economy. She founded the You & CO2 programme, now used in schools across three continents, to empower young people to take climate action. Her interdisciplinary research explores inclusive and creative approaches to sustainability learning, from developing measures of climate capability to ensuring equitable access for learners with special educational needs. A Fellow of the HEA, she is a recognised public voice on sustainability and education, contributing to national media and major climate initiatives.
