IISTL’s 13th Colloquium

The event, the thirteenth in an enormously successful series that is now a fixed diary entry in the commercial and maritime law world, attracted participants from legal practice, the judiciary, the insurance and energy industries and from academia.

The Colloquium focused on maritime liabilities in a regional and global context. Over two days, papers were delivered on subjects such as pollution liabilities, wreck removal, ship recycling, the legal implications of the new phenomenon of smart containers, passenger liabilities, limitation, cyber risks, direct action against insurers, ship arrest, cross border insolvency, BREXIT and jurisdiction.

A distinctive feature of this Colloquium was the active involvement of the participants. All presentations created lively debate; with speakers addressing informed and perceptive comments and questions.

In addition to the following IISTL members, Professors Soyer, Baughen and Tettenborn, Associate Professor Leloudas and Dr Kurtz-Sheford, those presenting at the event included Balvinder Ahluwalia (Gard), Professor Lia Athansassiou (Athens University), Professor Olivier Cachard (Lorraine University, Nancy), Andrew Chamberlain (HFW), Simon Cooper (Ince & Co), Måns Jacobsson (Sweden), Associate Professor Henning Jessen (World Maritime University), Peter McDonald-Eggers QC (7 King’s Bench Walk), Dr Frank Stevens (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) and Professor Bülent Sõzer (Yeditepe University, Turkey).

Speaking after the event, IISTL Director Professor Baris Soyer, said:

“This was yet another successful gathering of maritime lawyers facilitated by the IISTL. The topics discussed were contemporary, the participants were expert in their field and the audience as involved as any I have come across. As ever, the papers will be published in a book format by Informa Law, and I have no doubt that the comments and questions from the audience will help the speakers in fine tuning their papers.

I am grateful to the members of the IISTL for their immense assistance in putting together this event. I am also indebted to the speakers and participants who took their time out of work to be with us at Swansea for two days. We are also grateful to Professor Elwen Evans QC, Head of the College of Law and Criminology, for her continuing support to the Institute and hosting the Colloquium dinner.”
