Group of students

French, German and Spanish are taught on our two flagship programmes, BA Modern Languages and BA Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, as well as a range of Joint Honours options. These include Business Management, English Literature, History, International Relations, and the recently-introduced Combined Honours which allows you to select modules from across the School of Culture and Communication.

Hispanic and Latin American Studies

Our Spanish section comprises five permanent members of staff, all of whom are native speakers. They are:

Their teaching expertise covers a wide range of areas across Spanish and Latin American Studies. These include translation and interpreting (with a focus on technology, specialised texts and professional practice), language acquisition and Catalan. We also offer specialist knowledge in Latin American cultural and political studies, with a focus on Venezuela, Uruguay and Argentina (including Welsh Patagonia). Our research-led teaching explores key contemporary issues such as climate justice, cultural semiotics and climate fiction, and spans digital media to bilingualism. Students benefit from staff who are active researchers, experienced practitioners and contributors to public debate. Whether you are interested in mastering Spanish, understanding Hispanic cultures, or pursuing a career in translation, our team brings global expertise and real-world insight to every class.

In studying Spanish, you will become part of a vibrant and supportive community. Weekly gatherings like Café Guay and the University Spanish Society offer opportunities to connect with fellow students, practise the language, and celebrate Hispanic cultures together. Our students have built lasting connections during their Year Abroad in countries such as Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Spain. These experiences have helped launch careers across the globe, including in China, the United States, and the Middle East.

Initiatives like the Literacy Project further deepen our sense of community by fostering meaningful engagement with local Spanish-speaking asylum seekers. Through this project, you can enhance your confidence and communication skills while contributing to the wider community as active citizens and building partnerships beyond the university.

Last but not least,  Swansea University’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Portugal, Spain and the Americas (CEPSAM) is an interdisciplinary hub uniting expertise from Modern Languages, History, Political & Cultural Studies, Geography and more. It supports MA and PhD supervision in Iberian and Latin American-focused projects, offering research in English, Welsh, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese and Spanish. CEPSAM fosters collaborative research across Wales via the Wales LusoHispanic Hub and hosts initiatives like "Green Hispanisms," our inaugural international environmental humanities conference. Other projects focus on heritage speakers of Spanish in Wales or amplify indigenous Patagonian voices through digital platforms and cocreated educational materials.
