Course Overview

This MSc in Advanced Sport Performance Science has developed a track record in successfully preparing students for employment in high performance sport or progression towards doctoral research (PhD) degrees.

Fundamentally, this programme equips students with the underpinning theoretical knowledge and practical skills across performance science domains. Students will develop core competencies across applied data science, training science, recovery science, competition day strategies and performance planning.

Uniquely, this MSc includes a 12-month placement allocation with one of our industry partners in elite football, rugby, swimming, tennis and applied data analytics. These invaluable placement experiences significantly enhance our students’ employability prospects, preparing our graduates to pursue their desired career path.

Our course is anchored around major sporting events, which means challenges will be real-world and applied. Our modules will provide students with a toolbox of solutions to apply and continually develop as a practitioner.

This MSc programme in Advanced Sport Performance Science will build on staff expertise and partnerships to deliver a programme that ensures students are equipped with key theoretical and practical skills required to work in high performance sport.

The MSc has been designed in collaboration with industry leaders and practitioners, which offers a unique opportunity for students to learn from world-leading academics in state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories, whilst also working alongside leading high performance sport practitioners.



Your Advanced Sport Performance Science Experience

2022-23 Cohort

Throughout your time at Swansea, you will make extensive use of our dedicated Biomechanics Laboratory, which is home to a state-of-the-art motion analysis system. You will also work closely in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory. This contains a range of exercise ergometers, lung function assessment, blood analysis and muscle function testing equipment.

As you progress, your developing interests and abilities will combine with hands-on experience of advanced equipment, establishing skills which are vital to securing employment.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must normally hold an undergraduate degree at 2:1 level (or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University) in Sports Science or similar relevant science discipline. See - Country-specific Information for European Applicants 2019 and Country-specific Information for International Applicants 2019.

Applicants will also be interviewed (in person or by Skype or Zoom) before any offer is made. Dates for interviews will be arranged after the application has been reviewed.

English Language
IELTS 6.5 Overall (5.5+ each comp.) or Swansea University recognised equivalent. Full details of our English Language policy, including certificate time validity, can be found here.

How You're Taught

The programme will utilise a variety of teaching methods including lectures, small group work, practical laboratory-based sessions, projects, and the use of virtual learning environments. The practical skills and professional placement focus on this programme will mean teaching will be authentic and practice driven. Modules may use lecture recording, blended learning and flipped learning approaches.

Unfortunately, there is currently no formal Welsh-medium provision on this course.
