Adult Critical Care Nursing

Course Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Adult Critical Care Nursing is designed to prepare registered nurses to deliver safe, effective, and evidence‑based care for critically ill adults. This one‑year, part‑time programme aligns with the Critical Care Nurse Network Leads’ (CC3N) National Framework, enabling you to achieve Step 2 and Step 3 critical care competencies.

Commissioned by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), the programme is delivered in collaboration with Swansea Bay University Health Board and Hywel Dda University Health Board. The course has been supported by national critical care organisations including the British Association of Critical Care Nurses and the All Wales Critical Care Nursing Committee.

Grounded in advanced clinical practice, leadership, and quality improvement, the curriculum is designed to support local critical care units in meeting Guideline for the Provision of Intensive Care Services (GPICS) standards relating to staffing, education, and service excellence. Throughout the programme, you will develop the confidence and capability to lead multidisciplinary teams, apply evidence‑based interventions, and drive innovation in patient care, contributing to improved outcomes and the highest standards of critical care provision.

Upon successful completion, you will hold a nationally recognised Postgraduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing, as stipulated by GPICS.

Why Adult Critical Care Nursing at Swansea

You will be taught at the School of Health and Social Care, based on Singleton Park campus at the edge of the beautiful Gower Peninsula and just a stone’s throw from the nearest hospital. Our academic staff are qualified nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals, many of whom are also practising clinicians, providing an exceptional combination of theoretical rigour, professional insight, and practical expertise.

We have an outstanding reputation for Nursing at Swansea University and are ranked Top 200 in the World for Nursing (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025). As a student, you will benefit from our strong links with Welsh health boards, whose clinical teams hold the up‑to‑date expertise required to support and sign off the competencies essential to critical care nursing roles.

You will also benefit from high‑quality simulation learning alongside your theoretical and practice‑based education, helping you develop confidence and capability in complex critical care environments.

To join the programme, you must be employed as a critical care nurse, have completed CC3N Step One competencies, and have the consent of your employer before applying.

Your Adult Critical Care Nursing Experience

At Swansea, you will benefit from exceptional clinical simulation facilities designed to replicate real critical care environments. Across our Singleton Park and St David’s Park campuses, you will train in high‑fidelity clinical suites equipped with advanced simulation technology. These immersive sessions allow you to practise complex scenarios, strengthen your decision‑making, and build confidence in a safe and supportive setting. Simulation also enables you to develop competencies that may not always arise during routine clinical practice, helping you gain a broad and varied critical care experience.

Alongside simulation, much of your learning will take place within your own critical care unit, where you will work towards the nationally recognised CC3N Step 2 and Step 3 competencies. You will be supported by experienced clinical mentors, Lead Assessors, and Practice Education Nurses who provide structured guidance and feedback. This close collaboration between practice and academic teams ensures your progress is continually monitored and that you can confidently apply advanced theoretical knowledge within real‑world clinical settings.

Your clinical experience will also include rich interprofessional learning. You will work alongside anaesthetists, physiotherapists, radiographers, pharmacists, dietitians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team, gaining valuable insight into collaborative critical care practice. These experiences are recorded within your competency portfolio and help you develop the professional communication and teamwork skills essential for contemporary critical care environments.

Leadership and teaching are an integral part of your journey. You will have opportunities to supervise colleagues, lead aspects of simulation scenarios, and develop skills in prioritisation, delegation, and compassionate leadership. Through your quality‑improvement poster project, you will contribute to service development within your own unit, applying evidence and innovation to enhance patient care.

This combination of high‑quality facilities, structured clinical support, interprofessional exposure, and real‑world leadership development will prepare you to become a confident, safe, and capable critical care nurse who meets the highest national standards.

Adult Critical Care Nursing Career

Upon successful completion, you will have achieved Step 3 competencies and gained a nationally recognised critical care nursing qualification, positioning you to advance professionally within your clinical areas. You will be equipped with enhanced clinical skills, a robust underpinning knowledge of critical care practice, and strengthened leadership and teaching capabilities. This preparation enables you to assume greater responsibility within the multidisciplinary team, pursue leadership or management roles, and act as effective clinical mentors who support and develop their colleagues within the critical care setting.

Once you have achieved the CC3N Step 3 competencies, you are well positioned to progress to advanced managerial or further clinical competencies. This progression supports career development opportunities such as promotion to roles including Critical Care Ward Manager, Practice Educator, or advancement into additional training pathways such as Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) programmes.
