Course Overview

The MA is a flexible programme, reflecting the nature of education including education research, policy and practice.

The programme is flexible to allow for professionals at different stages of their career to further develop their professional competence and interests in education.

You will learn how to undertake and use educational research, to reflect on your own practice, using the latest educational trends and developments, to inform and enhance the way you work.

Why Education at Swansea?

Based in the School of Social Sciences, on our stunning Singleton Park campus, you will study at a programme designed to promote individual and collaborative research activity of international standard.

Postgraduate training is available to enhance academic and professional development, as well as seminar programmes, workshops and international conferences.

Your Education Experience

You will study a set number of core and optional 20-credit modules, before undertaking a 60-credit dissertation project of your choosing in the second part of the course.

Varied modules include Research Methods in Education, Additional Learning Needs, Digital Education and Practice, Leading and Managing in Education, and Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment and Education.

Education Employment Opportunities

If you're working as a teacher, lecturer, educational leader, manager, or aspiring to a career in education, the MA will give you an insight into the latest trends and leading research, and how those impact on policy and practice.

Education policy and practice is complex and constantly evolving. Working in the education sector therefore requires mastery of a complex set of skills to guide, motivate and facilitate learning. This programme is designed to enable you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to adapt and thrive in such a dynamic sector.

Modules

Students starting in September or January will study the same core modules as part of the programme. Dates for January intake to be confirmed.

You study a set number of 20-credit modules before undertaking a 60-credit dissertation project of your choosing.

Entry Requirements

The typical entry requirement is 2.1 degree or equivalent in any degree background. Lower grade plus relevant supplemental experience can also be considered. C/4 in GCSE Maths and English required (or equivalent).

For applicants whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.5 in Writing and 5.5 in remaining components) or equivalent English test.

How You're Taught

Teaching on the MA Education is a combination of teacher and student input. This includes lectures and seminars where students have the opportunity to share their own experiences and knowledge with their peers, and the teaching staff within the programme. Within the lectures and seminars, both individual and group work are involved, and this can include participating in tasks, discussion and debate, or watching videos. This is combined with a blended learning approach where pre-lecture and post-lecture self-directed resources are made available to enhance your learning experience.

Welsh Provision

At least 40 credits

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study at least 40 credits of this postgraduate course through the medium of Welsh. Many University departments develop and offer Welsh medium or bilingual modules as part of their courses so you will need to discuss the possibilities with the relevant Programme Director. You can study a module or modules through the medium of Welsh where possible or submit your dissertation in Welsh with guidance from a subject specialist through the medium of Welsh.

Academi Hywel Teifi is here to support you throughout your time at Swansea University. We can offer you:

  • Access to generous Welsh-language study scholarships or bursaries.
  • Access to modules taught wholly or partly in Welsh.
  • Access to the Arwain mobile app for the latest information about Welsh-medium courses and modules available to download free on the App Store and Google Play.
  • An interview through the medium of Welsh when applying for a place.
  • Personal correspondence in Welsh, English or bilingually.
  • The option to create and submit your coursework or sit exams through the medium of Welsh (even if you have chosen to study in English), and your work will be assessed in Welsh.
  • A Welsh-speaking Personal Tutor.
  • One-to-one support to improve your academic Welsh language skills.
  • An opportunity to gain an additional free qualification that serves as evidence of your Welsh language ability for future employers.
  • Membership of the Swansea University Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Visit the Welsh Language Rights webpage for further information about Students' Welsh Language Rights.

Continuing to study through the medium of Welsh will be:

  • a natural step for you if you have studied through the medium of Welsh at undergraduate level.
  • a way of maximizing your chances of getting the best education.
  • a way of receiving a high level of support as the study groups are smaller.
  • a valuable addition to your CV and career development.
