Our Research Highlights
Although it is a new department with environment actively being built, we are delighted to achieve 97.9% world-leading and internationally excellent research publication ratings. We will continue to build on these fantastic results and look forward to growing our department within the excellent Swansea environment.
Our Vision
Our vision is to collaborate closely with industry to translate our research into real-world applications and commercialisation. We operate pioneering multidisciplinary technology development that intersects with other scientific disciplines.
Our Environment
Chemistry was re-established in 2016 as part of the University’s ambition and we are a versatile, ambitious and impact-driven community that combines established, mid-career and promising ECR staff. We have an inherent focus on collaborative, interdisciplinary research, exceptional links with industry (with extensive industry collaborative relationships in semiconductors, steel, pharmaceuticals and sensing) and an agenda for the generation of long-term socio-economic impacts arising from applied research.
We submitted 20 category A staff to REF2021. The department has 23 PhD students and over 100 undergraduates. Total research awarded to Chemistry in the latest REF period was £3.1 m. The Department were part of the awarded £30M Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) to Physics, Chemistry and Engineering, supplemented by £20M commitment of industrial support
Our Outputs
During the assessment period 461 outputs were published with 67% published in the top 10% most cited journals. Our papers have had over 9000 citations with the average paper being cited 19.4 times. Our field weighted citation impact is 74% above the global average.
Our Impact
Our research is fundamental in helping a Swansea based company to develop its microneedling technology and bring it to market. We work with a world leading semiconductor company to diversify their application portfolio and process knowledge, enabling them to extend into new markets.
