Our strengths

The strength of our research environment, encompassing all aspects of the research lifecycle, was measured in the Research Excellence Framework 2021  in which 91% of our research environment was judged to be 4* World- leading or Internationally excellent, conducive to creating the highest quality research. 10 Units of Assessment achieved 100% 4 *world-leading or 3* internationally excellent for their environment, including Business and Management, Modern Languages and Social Work and Social Policy. Our research environment is dynamic and imaginative. We are combining innovation and excellent facilities to encourage more work across disciplinary boundaries. The Morgan Advanced Studies Institute (MASI)  provides a home for multidisciplinary research to flourish, enhancing our competitiveness for interdisciplinary funding streams.

Our Research Culture

At Swansea University we proudly hold the European Commission HR Excellence in Research Award in recognition of our commitment to support the career development of all Research Staff.

The Swansea University Research Staff Working Group oversees the delivery of the Concordat Action Plan, to support the Career Development of Researchers.

We are committed to:

  • developing an inclusive, open and responsible Research Culture.
  • providing an environment that enables our researchers, professional support colleagues (research enablers) and our collaborators to deliver and undertake excellent, responsible research and innovation.

What is Research Culture?

Based on valuable feedback from CEDARS 2023 and through Research Culture Cafés held across the University (attended by post-docs, technicians, academics, research enablers and PhD students) we have developed a Research Culture Action Plan to address our own issues within our research environment.

Helping advance research assessment practices in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has taken a significant step forward in advancing responsible research assessment with the establishment of a National Chapter of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), co-led by Swansea University. Together with the University of Strathclyde and Loughborough University, we are working to promote systemic reform whilst reflecting on ambitions for reforming research assessment.
