Seventeen - A Competition for Young People in Swansea Bay

To enter you must be:

• 16 or 17 years of age on 31st August 2021
• Living in the Swansea Bay area

We welcome submissions from a third party (e.g. parent, guardian, teacher) on behalf of an entrant. However, please ensure you have the permission of the entrant and confirm by agreeing to the consent terms and conditions on the entry form.

We want you to select one of the UN SDGs and tell us what it means to you (you can choose more than one UN SDG but you will need to put in a separate entry for each).

We want you to share your vision of the world you want to live in through a short piece of text:

• Your written submission can be in any form you like. You could write about your experiences, your hopes or your worries. Or you may choose to write a mission statement, a poem or even song lyrics.
• Your written submission should be a minimum of 50 and a maximum of 300 words.
• Your work must be your own, original work and not previously submitted into another competition.
• You may use quotations, where appropriate, as part of the submission.
• If you are unsure what goal to submit your entry against select “18. Not Sure” on the online entry form and the competition team will select the most appropriate UN SDG to submit your entry against on your behalf.
• You can submit your written entry in English or Welsh.

Top Tips

When considering the UN SDGs and content for your submission try to think:

• What do they mean to you personally? To your family? To your friends?
• What do they mean to the street that you live on or the school that you go to?
• What about to Swansea and Swansea Bay?
• How do you feel about them? Do you feel hopeful? Do you feel worried?
• Do you feel as if enough people understand them and what they truly mean to your generation or your community?
• What would you change if you were in charge?

To enter you will need to complete the online application form which will you find at the bottom of this page. 

• Your entry must consist of a piece of your own, original writing of between 50 and a maximum of 300 words. 
• You must submit your entry using the online form by midnight on 31st December 2021. We cannot accept entries submitted after this date/time.
• You may submit multiple entries, but only one entry per Sustainable Development Goal.
• Please make sure you have read and agreed to the terms and conditions (see below) before you submit your entry.

• There will be one winner from each one of the 17 UN SDG themes. The winner of each theme will receive £100 in vouchers.
• There will also be one overall winner from all of the submissions. The overall winner will receive £250 in vouchers.

As part of the competition, we will be inviting winning entrants to be photographed as part of a professional photoshoot. These photos will be used to accompany written submissions which will be displayed within our Seventeen online gallery. Copies will be made available to the winning entrants. We really would love to include the photographs of all winning entries, however we do appreciate some people may not want to have their photographs taken or displayed, so we have made this element of the competition optional.

Through Seventeen, we want to understand what the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals mean to you. Your unique perspectives and personal viewpoints are what is most important; not how good you are at writing or spelling. Your opinions, experiences and your voice are your opportunities to inspire, educate and to win!

Here is what the judges, who will be appointed by the Sustainability Team at Swansea University, will be looking for when judging the competition entries:

• Is the entry original, honest and your own interpretation and feelings on the UN SDGs?
• Is it a fresh or new point of view, idea or concept?
• Will the entry be able to make an impression or inspire and motivate others around the goal?
• Does it fulfil all the terms and conditions of the contest?
• Have you expressed your ideas creatively?

Judging will not be based on (so don’t be put off!):

• Your grammar and spelling
• Whether English /Welsh is your first language

Remember, the purpose of the competition is not to judge entrants on English/Welsh language skills, spelling or grammar. We think the content, ideas, views and feelings on the goal you choose to write about and how you express them is far more important. 

In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 (and all other relevant Data Protection legislation), the Company will hold the personal data of entrants supplied on the Entry Form securely. The data will only be used in the process of administering the seventeen competition and will not be transferred to any third party not directly involved in the exhibition.

Full Terms and Conditions

SEVENTEEN Art Prize – Terms and Conditions as at 1^st January 2021

General Terms and Conditions

1. The terms and conditions relate to a competition entitled “SEVENTEEN” which the Sustainability Team in partnership with Swansea University, its respective licensees, assigns, parents, affiliates and/or subsidiary companies intends to run during 2021 and from which the University shall select an unspecified number of works to be exhibited at locations and times to be confirmed by the University.

2. By entering this competition, (the entrant) accepts these terms and conditions as set out hereinafter and the entrant further accepts that the terms and conditions of this competition may be altered, amended, varied or otherwise modified by the University at any time up to and including the final determination of the competition. The entrant also accepts that any such alteration, amendment or variation may be made orally or in writing and at all times the terms and conditions are at the sole discretion of the company.

Entry Terms and Conditions

3. The Competition is open to all persons aged 16 or 17 on 31st August 2021.

4. The competition shall open at 7am on 1st October 2021 and shall close at midnight on 31^st December 2021.  Entries received after this date and time shall not be considered for entry under any circumstances. The University reserves the right, in its absolute discretion, to extend the closing date of the competition for a reasonable period of time and where so extended the date upon which the University decide to be the subsequent closing date shall be the closing date for the purposes of these terms and conditions.

5. In order to enter the competition, all entrants shall complete an online Microsoft entry form and follow all directions therein.

6. The submitted entry must be original. The written work must be a minimum of 50 words and not exceed 300 words. The work selected for exhibition must be available from 1st February 2022 – 30th September 2022. While Swansea University shall endeavour to provide advance notice to all entrants with respect to key dates and timelines, Swansea University reserves the right to make such alterations and changes to key dates as are reasonably necessitated.

7. A third party (e.g. school teacher, other representative) may submit work on behalf of the entrant, but the third party must confirm: a. receipt of the artist’s permission, and provide evidence of full authority and legal right, to submit the work, and; b. that in order to provide the information regarding the artist or the artist’s work, they have first consulted with the artist and made all appropriate enquiries for the purpose of providing that information and taken the necessary steps to ensure accuracy of all such information provided, and; c. agree to be bound by these Conditions of Entry as the artist would be had they entered.

8. Work that does not fit within the Conditions of Entry will not be admissible and will not be considered for inclusion or exhibition. Swansea University shall retain full and sole discretion over every question as to the admissibility or otherwise of any given work. The following are examples (without limitation) of inadmissible works: a. Copies of original works; b. Works that are in breach of copyright (or reasonably considered by the Company to create a risk of infringing upon a copyright; c. Works that have been previously exhibited; d. The work is incomplete; e. Work, that in the reasonable view of the Swansea University is likely to breach our committed values. 

9. Entrants are entitled to withdraw their entry at any up until midnight on 14th January 2022. Winning entrants will be notified by 14th January 2022 and will have until 14th March 2022 to withdraw their entry. After the winning entries have been announced and prize monies awarded there will be no right to withdraw the entry. All entrants reserve the right to take part in the professional photoshoot.

10. In addition, Swansea University reserves the right to disqualify a work, where in the reasonable view of the Company: a. The work does not meet any of the entry criteria; b. The entrant cannot be contacted; c. The entrant does not respond within 72 hours of being contacted by Swansea University.

11. The competition is open to relatives and associates of Swansea University employees.

Judging

12. The judges shall be appointed by the Sustainability Team at Swansea University in such number and of such qualification as it sees fit at its sole discretion. The Judges’ decision shall be final and no correspondence will be entered into. When judging, there will be no segregation by genre or style etc with one winner from each of the 17 UN SDG themes and one overall winner.

Exhibition

13. Swansea University shall endeavour to notify successful entrants who will be invited to have their work exhibited on or shortly after 14th February 2022 or such other date as the University, at its absolute discretion, shall elect (the “Notification Date”). All work for the exhibition will be prepared by Swansea University at no cost to the entrant. 

14. The exhibition material will remain the property of Swansea University and may be used in a wider UK exhibition.

15. Entrants selected as winners and a number of other entrants will be contacted and asked to take part in a professional portrait shoot. Entrants reserve the right to refuse the photoshoot element of the competition without discrimination.

16. Swansea University will endeavour to organise an exhibition tour of the selected works at locations and times to be confirmed. All decisions relating thereto are within the sole discretion of the Swansea University. Swansea University makes no representations or offers any guarantees as to the intentions surrounding the Exhibition.

17. Entrants are responsible for paying all travel costs and expenses incurred if they wish to attend the Exhibition or Private View or any element thereof, unless otherwise agreed by Swansea University.

18. Works selected for exhibition will not be available for sale. All works produced for the exhibition will remain the property of Swansea University, unless agreed otherwise with the entrant. Any entrant that takes part in the photoshoot will be offered a personal copy of their own work.

19. Swansea University reserves the right to deny admission to the competition, or withdraw a work from the competition or exhibition if for any reason the work, or any circumstances surrounding the display of the work, appears to Swansea University to expose it to risk of legal proceedings, reputational damage or other potential loss or if the Work acts in any way detrimental to the brand of Swansea University.

Prize Awards

20. Any Competition monies awarded to winning entrant is paid gross of all taxes and charges. The prizes are as follows: a. one overall winner £250 in vouchers b. Sixteen winners of the UN SDG themes £100 in vouchers. For the avoidance of doubt, Swansea University shall have full and final discretion on all questions pertaining to the award of this prize and Swansea University shall take into account the views expressed by members of the public in relation thereto.

21. Notwithstanding the above, prize quantum and composition remains at all times at the sole discretion of Swansea University.

22. It is the responsibility of the winning entrants to declare, if relevant, such winnings as income to their local tax authorities and the winning entrants shall be wholly liable for any taxes payable and shall indemnify and hold Swansea University safe and harmless from all claims relating to such taxes and charges. Swansea University shall in no circumstances be liable for any taxes payable on such awards.

Data Protection

23. By completing the entry form, the entrant agrees to Swansea University collecting, retaining, processing, or otherwise utilising the entrant's personal information solely for the purposes of processing the entrant's entry to the competition, the promotion and administration of the competition and the creation of the exhibition. The entrant's personal information will not be shared with third parties or otherwise processes for alternative purposes without the entrants consent.

24. By completing the entry form and by providing any further information to Swansea University in relation to the competition, the entrant warrants that all such information supplied is truthful, accurate, and not misleading or otherwise incomplete. Where it reasonably or justifiably appears to the company, that the entrant is in breach of this warranty, or where Swansea University understands or apprehends there to be a risk that the entrants, has or will bring the competition or Swansea University into disrepute, Swansea University shall be entitled to take such steps as are necessary to conclude the entrant's involvement in the competition forthwith.

25. The entrant shall not make, or permit any person to make, any public announcement, communication or circular (announcement), be it verbal, written or howsoever broadcast on any platform to include (without limitation) social media, on or concerning the existence, subject matter, results or terms of the competition, the wider transactions contemplated by it, or the relationship between the parties, without the prior written consent of Swansea University save where such information is already in the public domain or the express written consent of the company is provided. Breach of this section shall be treated as a breach of confidentiality and shall be considered a material breach of these terms and conditions.

26. In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 (and all other relevant Data Protection legislation as may be enacted from time to time), Swansea University will hold the personal data of entrants supplied on the Entry Form securely on a legitimate interests basis for a period of four years. The data will only be used in the process of administering the ‘SEVENTEEN’ Competition and will not be transferred to any third party not directly involved in this Exhibition.

Ownership and Copyright

27. Each entrant, by entering ‘SEVENTEEN’ Competition confirms that they hold all intellectual property rights in the work and that they have obtained prior written approval for the use of any third party copyrighted material contained in the submitted work.

28. Without prejudice to the within terms, Swansea University recognises that the copyright in all works created by the entrant remains with the entrant, however it is a necessary condition of entry, and by so entering, the entrant hereby agrees to grant all necessary rights licences, approvals and authorisations to Swansea University to include, inter alia, the work in any footage recorded or captured during the competition / exhibition, including the right to use such images for the promotion of the competition, exhibiting the work publicly, referring to the work on digital platforms in the control of Swansea University, its affiliates or subsidiaries or parents, and for the avoidance of doubt, the entrant hereby grants Swansea University with a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty free licence to use and publish such footage or materials obtained or other materials in electronic format for purposes connected solely with the competition. Where further consent is necessary from the entrant, it shall not be unreasonably withheld.

29. Swansea University shall be at liberty to assign or licence their rights in such footage or other materials without the prior consent of the entrant and the entrant hereby agrees to forego all injunctive or other legal remedies with the intent of restraining the use by Swansea University of all footage or material obtained, in any jurisdiction. The entrant is hereby notified of its entitlement to obtain independent legal advice prior to the entry of this competition, whether the entrant choses avail of such advice or not.

30. The entrant hereby waives (i) all moral rights as may exist in any footage or imagery or other materials obtained that contain the entrant's work under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act or 1988 (as amended) and (ii) all such equivalent or commensurate rights as may exist in any other jurisdiction worldwide. The entrant furthermore agrees to not permit, or cause to be instituted, legal proceedings in any jurisdiction any claim regarding any infringement of moral (or commensurate rights), or claim regarding any alleged derogatory treatment of the entrants work.

31. Entrants will allow the work to be photographed and reproduced by Swansea University for the purposes of promoting the exhibition including; catalogue, press and publicity and websites in all territories. Copyright of all works remains the property of the artist. Any enquiries for copyright will be referred to the entrant.

32. For the avoidance of doubt, the entrant hereby warrants that they own the copyright to the competition entry and further warrant that the work contains no feature or aspect or material that constitutes a breach (or potential/anticipatory breach) of a third party’s intellectual property.

Conditions of Entry

33. By entering the ‘SEVENTEEN’ Competition entrants are agreeing to all of the within Conditions of Entry. Swansea University decision on all matters pertaining to the above is final. Swansea University reserves the right, at any time, and from time to time to amend, modify, vary, or discontinue the terms of this competition.

34. The entrant acknowledges that in entering into these terms and conditions, it does not rely on, and shall have no remedies in respect of, any statement, representation, assurance or warranty (whether made innocently or negligently) that is not set out in this agreement.

35. These terms and condition (as may be amended from time to time) constitutes the entire agreement between the parties and supersedes and extinguishes all previous agreements, promises, assurances, warranties, representations and understandings between them, whether written or oral, relating to its subject matter.

36. This competition and the within Terms and Conditions, and all questions relating thereto shall be governed by English and Welsh law and shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
