• ML-180 Introduction to Studying Languages for Business Students

  This module is an introduction to language learning for business students enrolled onto the languages¿ pathway. The students will take part in taster sessions for each language offered at beginner¿s level and will gain insight into business related matters of countries in which the languages are spoken. In addition, the students will receive training in language learning techniques, terminology, and intercultural awareness.

• MLF101 French for Beginners I

  The module is specifically designed for students who have no previous knowledge of the French language. Student will acquire basic vocabulary as well as a grasp of fundamental grammatical structures and will be able to communicate in both written and spoken French. The four contact hours are dedicated to developing vocabulary, writing, reading, listening and speaking skills. Classes are conducted mainly in French. In addition to class work, students are also expected to undertake extensive private study. We will use the coursebook L'Atelier+ A1 méthode de français by Marie-Noëlle Cocton et al (Didier, 2022).

• MLF102 French for Beginners II

  This module follows on from MLF101 and is designed for students with little or no knowledge of French. It is designed to extend the range of vocabulary and familiarity with grammatical structures acquired in MLF101 and to enhance students¿ cultural awareness of contemporary France. Students wishing to continue with French at higher levels may be able to do so on satisfactory completion of MLF101 and MLF102. We will use the coursebook L'Atelier+ A2 méthode de français by Marie-Noëlle Cocton et al (Didier, 2022).

• MLF160A French Language 1A

  This module is the foundation of advanced level study of French which will equip students with the skills needed to use French in day-to-day life and professional environments. The module aims to consolidate and extend the language skills developed by students at A level (or equivalent) and to facilitate their progress in linguistic competence. It concentrates on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken French, establishing a firm grammatical understanding of the language, and extending students¿ vocabulary to read, write, interpret and speak about issues related to contemporary French society and culture. The module aims to enhance students¿ employability by providing a grounding in the vocabulary and use of French in contexts relating to the world of work. Classes are mainly conducted in French. It is typically taken in conjunction with MLF160B. There is also a Welsh-medium version of this module: MLF160AW.

  Mae'r modiwl hwn yn gosod sylfaen ar gyfer astudio Ffrangeg ar lefel uwch, a fydd yn galluogi myfyrwyr i feithrin y sgiliau sy'n angenrheidiol i ddefnyddio Ffrangeg mewn amgylchiadau cyffredinol a phroffesiynol. The aim of the module is to enable you to widen your vocabulary and to grasp of fundamental grammatical structures, enabling you to communicate in both written and spoken French. The four contact hours are dedicated to further developing your vocabulary, writing, reading and speaking skills. Classes are conducted mainly in French. In addition to class work, students are also expected to undertake extensive private study.

• MLF260A French Language 2A

  This module aims at building on the skills and knowledge acquired in the first year of study, and will equip students with the skills needed to use French in more complex concrete and abstract social and professional environments appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It concentrates on developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken French, so that the student can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. It also aims at establishing a firm grammatical understanding of the language, and extending students¿ vocabulary to read, write, interpret and debate (explaining a viewpoint, giving independent advantages and disadvantages of various options) about topical issues related to contemporary French society and culture. Moreover, the module aims to enhance students¿ employability by systematically developing a personal professional career planning portfolio, providing a sound insight into the world of work. Classes will be conducted mainly in French. There is also a Welsh-medium version of this module.

• MLF260B French Language 2B

  This module builds on and consolidates the skills and knowledge acquired in MLF260A by concentrating on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken French appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It specifically aims at preparing the students for their Year Abroad and/or extend intercultural awareness, widening students¿ vocabulary to read, write and do presentations about topics related to France. The module also aims to enhance students¿ employability, by training them to do a successful presentation using appropriate IT applications. Classes will be conducted mainly in French. There is also a Welsh-medium version of this module.

• MLF330A French General Language 3A

  This module is the culmination of advanced level study of French which will equip students with the skills needed to communicate orally and in writing at a near-native level. This module aims to consolidate and extend the language skills developed by students from the beginners and advanced language pathways. It concentrates on developing clarity, fluency, organisation, structure and accuracy in written and spoken French, establishing a firm understanding of the finer points of the language relating to grammar and discourse, and extending students¿ vocabulary to read, write, and speak about issues related to contemporary francophone society and culture. Classes are mainly conducted in French. It is typically taken in conjunction with MLF330B. There is also a Welsh- medium version of this module: MLF330AW.

• MLF330B French General Language 3B

  This module offers practice and development of skills in translation from English to French and French oral and communication skills. Writing and oral classes will give you practice in the exercises covered by the module, and will be supported by a series of grammar workshops that will reinforce your existing grammatical knowledge as well as introducing new concepts. For this module, the workshops will cover French parts of speech other than verbs and other grammatical structures (interrogatives, negatives and word order).

• MLF390A French Language 3A

  This module builds on the skills and knowledge acquired in the second year of study, and will equip students with the skills needed to use French/German/Spanish in more complex social and professional contexts. It concentrates on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken French, enabling students to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. • MLF390B French Language 3B

  This is a combination of the TB2 General Language and Translation Workshop module. It builds on and consolidates the skills and knowledge acquired in MLF390A by concentrating on further developing fluency and accuracy in written and spoken French appropriate to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It specifically aims to extend students¿ intercultural awareness and widen students¿ vocabulary to read, write and do presentations about topics related to French society and culture. The module also aims to enhance students' employability by training them to give a successful presentation using appropriate IT applications. This module further develops and improves your practical skills in translating from French into English, developing awareness of different types of translation and different techniques required of translators and strategies employed by them. Students will work on different text types and conduct comparative analysis of relevant areas of French and English language and culture. The General Language classes will be mainly conducted in French.

• MLFM06 Beginners French for Postgraduate Students

  The module is specifically designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of the French language. During the first term, its aims is to enable you to acquire basic vocabulary as well as a grasp of fundamental grammatical structures, enabling you to communicate in both written and spoken French. The second term aims to widen your vocabulary and fundamental grammatical structures, enabling you to communicate in both written and spoken French. The four contact hours are dedicated to developing your vocabulary, writing, reading and speaking skills. Classes are conducted mainly in French. In addition to class work, students are also expected to undertake extensive private study

• MLFM07 Intermediate French for Postgraduate Students

  Professional translators typically need to be able to offer 2 languages pairs. Translation MA students who may have given up another language on leaving school can take this opportunity to pick it up again at Intermediate level and develop more advanced translation skills. This module combines the post A-Level first year General Language programme with, in the second semester, the corresponding Level 2 Translation Workshop (working into English). MA students join first and second year groups as appropriate, attending all classes and taking all assessments for the relevant modules. The final mark for the MA module is composed of the overall averages for the L1 General Language and L2 Translation Workshop modules, weighted 2:1. NB: this module involves 3 hours/week of classes in semester 1 and 4.5 hours/week in semester 2, and is only offered subject to satisfactory timetabling arrangements being available.
