About

Ruth is an innovation academic, Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist, and Fellow of The Higher Education Academy, with over 20 years experience in analytical chemistry. Her research focuses on developing sustainable analytical technologies and methods for medical and chemical analysis. Recent work has explored environmental medicine, green separation science, mass spectrometry and VUV spectroscopy.

She has led numerous collaborative projects with multinational companies, SMEs, academia and government agencies, funded by UKRI, the EU, industry, and charities. Ruth has supervised postgraduate research students (MRes, MPhil and PhD) and undertaken consultancy in separation science and mass spectrometry. Her research is widely published in leading journals including Chemosphere, Adv. Sample Prep., J. Env. Chem. Eng., Anal. Chem., J. Env. Management., Anal. Bioanal. Chem., BMC Cancer, and Anal. Methods. She regularly reviews submissions for these journals, as well as for regulatory bodies such as NRW (State of the Natural Resources Report, SoNaRR), and serves as an expert evaluator for EU funding, a member of UKRI's Interdisciplinary Assessment College Peer Review, and reviewer for EPSRC, BBSRC and MRC.

Ruth is an active member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and British Mass Spectrometry Society. She is an experienced educator in analytical chemistry, serving as an RSC qualifications assessor and trainer for industry, government and academia. She supports the RSC's Analytical Methods Committee, contributing to training and good practice guides as Deputy Chair of the Instrumental Analysis Expert Working Group (IAWEG) and member of the Sustainable Analytical Methods Expert Working Group. Ruth is also represents the UK in an IUPAC Working Group focused on evaluating the greenness of standard sample preparation methods, and is a member of the EuCheMS Sample Preparation Group.
