Social Work Services in a Diverse Society: Ethics, Values and Anti-Discriminatory Practice
This module provides an understanding of ethics and values applied to social work practice. Particular reference will be made to the social processes that lead to social exclusion in Wales and their impact on day-to-day life and service provision. It will also address the values and provision of social work services with particular reference to the concepts of stigma, empowerment, equalities and anti-oppressive practices and legislation. The historical evolution, philosophy and application of social work ethics, values and the Care Council for Wales Code of Practice for social care workers will be considered in relation to practice application with different groups. Emphasis will be placed on the development of the reflective and ethical practitioner.

Bydd cyfeiriad penodol yn cael ei wneud i'r prosesau cymdeithasol sy'n arwain at waharddiad cymdeithasol yng Nghymru a'u heffaith ar fywyd o ddydd i ddydd a darparu gwasanaethau. Bydd hefyd yn mynd i'r afael â gwerthoedd a darpariaeth gwasanaethau gwaith cymdeithasol gan gyfeirio'n arbennig at y cysyniadau stigma, grymuso, cydraddoldebau ac arferion gwrth-ormesol a deddfwriaeth. Applying Knowledge to Enhance Practice
This module is about developing critical knowledge within a specified area of interest in social work and social care. The primary focus is on conducting an independent literature review on a selected issue or problem experienced by a service user or carer group. Students will be required to locate research evidence and knowledge from a variety of contemporary sources, critically evaluate the contribution of literature within their chosen topic and to identify key themes, issues and debates for the interest of social work audiences. Emphasis will be given to formulating recommendations for enhancing professional practice. Students will consolidate skills in locating and synthesizing research evidence, developing written arguments and using current knowledge to improve and develop their practice.

Social Work Practice Learning 1
The central premise of this module is to prepare students for the 20 day placement and to enable them to fulfill the requirements of the Care Council of Wales. This module is a supervised period of at least 20 days in at least one practice setting in which students must meet the following National Occupational Standards (CCW, 2011) Performance Indicators:
¿ Key role 1, standard 2, Performance Indicator 1 (PI): seek professional supervision to develop accountable social work practice
¿ Key role 1, standard 2, PI 2: prepare for formal professional supervision in ways that maximise its effectiveness
¿ Key role 1, standard 2, PI 2: recognise ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts that arise in the course of social work practice
¿ Key role 3 standard 9, PI 1: plan how to use communication to secure initial engagement
¿ Key role 3 standard 9, PI 2: use communication skills to establish the social work relationship
Following the placement the student must have demonstrated that they have the basic interpersonal skills and values that are required for them to be considered suitable and safe to work directly with service users and carers; and that they have acquired an understanding, directly from service users and carers, of the impact of social work practice on them. The module also aims to prepare the students for the academic work which they complete on placement, which is a reflective commentary. Students will also develop a better understanding of their learning needs before going out on placement and have a clear understanding of what the expectations are. They will also have opportunity to work through ways of dealing with any problems or difficulties which may arise.

Social Work Skills and Knowledge and Service Users' Perspectives
The central premise of this module is to prepare students for the final 100 day placement and to enable them to fulfill the requirements of Social Care Wales during that placement and to provide evidence of a sufficient quality, and to develop the work needed in the portfolio, to enable them to gain their professional qualification in social work and to be ready to practice independently. The module also aims to prepare the students for the academic work which they complete on placement and to equip students with foundational knowledge and skills in interpersonal communication with individuals and groups in line with social work values, ethics and principles. This module will also contribute to their learning in assessment skills and assessing risk; Provide an exploration of the needs and experiences of service users and carers and the politically contested nature of their role in policy development, assessment and service provision.
The aim is to enable the students to understand critical reflection, its role and relevance in the practice setting and its importance in ensuring best practice. This will be achieved through teaching and discussion to develop interpersonal and communication skills and knowledge, both in a large group lectures and in small groups seminars. Students will develop skills in linking theory, legislation anti-discriminatory /anti-oppressive practice and the Welsh context to practice. Students will also develop a better understanding of their learning needs before going out on placement and have a clear understanding of what the expectations are. They will also have opportunity to work through ways of dealing with any problems or difficulties which may arise.
Students will then go out into their practice placements, and will attend `recall¿ days to monitor their experience of placement and their understanding of how the concepts discussed work in practice

Social Work Practice Educator Module
This module aims to equip qualified social workers intending to become `practice educators¿ with the knowledge and skills to enable them to contribute to a social work student¿s learning in a planned and effective way and make sound judgments about student competence. Completion of this module also provides evidence of meeting Social Care Wales¿ re-registration requirements for continuing professional education and learning. Successful completion provides recognition that the practice educating candidate is competent to provide practice assessment to others.
