Delyth James is a Professor in Pharmacy & Behavioural Medicine, based in the School of Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. Her work adopts a multi-disciplinary approach, collaborating with other disciplines such as Psychology, Physiology, Health & Social Care, Digital Technology and Art & Design to address problems relating to medication use. Over her career Delyth has secured a total grant income of nearly £2m for conducting scholarly and research activities.
Delyth is a registered pharmacist with over 20 years' experience of working in clinical practice in London (Charing Cross Hospital) and the Southeast of England (plus a year working in Saudi Arabia). Delyth's academic career (in England and Wales) has focussed on close collaboration with clinicians, healthcare professionals and patients to undertake applied innovative research. Delyth's research draws on psychological theory and behavioural science approaches to address problems which are central to the way people take medication in society.
Her specific areas of interest are in developing visual communication resources to support medication-taking, designing complex interventions in healthcare, and educating professionals to conduct effective consultations to support behaviour change.
Over her career Delyth has published over 100 outputs and presented papers at over 100 national and international conferences. She is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice and is a reviewer for nearly 40 other journals.
Delyth was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (LSW) in 2025. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, and Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. She is a member of the British Psychological Society and Division of Health Psychology. She was a panel member of the NHS Wales Research Ethics Committee (REC1) for 6 years and has been an active member of the Pharmacy Research Wales Steering Group for over ten years.
