Joseph’s research specialisms primarily focus on harm reduction and substance use, with a continued emphasis on Welsh policy and devolution within the youth justice system. His work integrates policy analysis, community engagement, and practical applications to address complex social issues.

 wJoseph’s work is grounded in a commitment to evidence-based practices and a strong belief in the importance of community engagement. He employs qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to capture the nuanced experiences of individuals and communities affected by substance use and youth justice policies. His methodological underpinnings are driven by the conviction that research should not only advance academic knowledge but also lead to tangible, positive changes in society. This belief fuels his dedication to harm reduction strategies and the development of policies that prioritise the well-being of vulnerable populations.

Leading harm reduction initiatives, including the "Spike on a Bike" project, which delivers harm reduction services to remote and underserved communities. Partnering with Hywel Dda Health Board and Dyfed Drug and Alcohol Service to implement innovative harm reduction strategies.

Joseph’s PhD examined the role and influence of Welsh youth offending teams in the context of pre-devolution youth justice. He is interested in investigating how policy and practice changes impact service delivery and outcomes for young people.

Joseph aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice, his work seeks to create safer, healthier communities and more effective service delivery systems. Through ongoing projects and collaborations, he continues to contribute to the field of criminology and public health, advocating for evidence-based policies and practices that prioritise the well-being of vulnerable populations.

• In 2018 Joe was awarded an Ede and Ravenscroft Anniversary Student Prize for ‘Outstanding Contribution’ to student life.

• As Co-Principal investigator Joe secured £15,000 Grant Funding for two research evaluations with a restoratively focused youth work organisation; Media Academy Cardiff, the interventions look at; adolescent parent violence & childhood exploitation.
