About

Jamie D Stacey is a Tutor in International Development. His research cuts across two main areas: in International Relations/ Politics/ International Development, his research focuses on human rights, in particular how political actors 'contest' and even redefine the very meaning of human rights. In this regard, he has sought to understand how human rights has been contested in Southeast Asia, and how ASEAN has served as a leading political actor in shaping human rights discourse in the region (ASEAN and Power in International Relations: Routledge, 2020). In philosophy, he is interested in moral obligation, moral luck, and the philosophy of the self. In this regard, he is working on a project that seeks to understand to what extent we can be said to have a moral obligation to be (reasonably) fit.

A graduate of Swansea University (1st class BA Politics, Distinction MA Politics, PhD in International Relations), he has been a visiting scholar to the EU Centre in Singapore. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2022) and strives to incorporate a range of teaching techniques (prompts, props, storytelling) into his teaching practice. Besides academia, he enjoys martial arts, yoga, D&D, being woken up at 12am, 2am, 4am by small humans, cooking strange yet beguiling breads and everything oats and dates, and is also a fiction writer, specialising in flash fiction and novels. His debut novel, All the Waves, Calling (Black Pear Press, 2023) explores themes of loss, resilience - and hope. Whether in academia or elsewhere in life, he is drawn to stories that empathise, encourage, and empower.
