About

Professor Karl Hawkins' research focuses on the development and clinical translation of novel biomarkers of blood coagulation through the exploitation of advanced rheological techniques. He is the lead investigator of the £1.2M EPSRC funded "clot busting" project.  He is author of over 70 publications in peer reviewed journals across the fields of fluid mechanics, medical devices and haematology. His research has attracted funding from EPSRC, MRC, HCRW, ESF, the British Council, various industrial partners, and an RCUK Fellowship, with a cumulative value exceeding £10M. Professor Hawkins is an active member of the rheology community, having served as the elected Secretary of the British Society of Rheology and is a Director of the Institute of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics. He also collaborates closely with clinicians at the Welsh Centre for Emergency Medicine Research, based at Morriston Hospital.
