About

Phatsimo has taught Criminology and Criminal Justice at Swansea University since 2016 and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

She is passionate about the rights of children, and this is at the heart of her work and research. Inspired by the young people she has worked with over the years, her Ph.D. research focused on the rights and responsibilities of children and young people, emphasising and advocating for their participation in empirical work and other matters affecting their lives.

Phatsimo currently serves on the Swansea University Council and Senate. She is also an active member of the Innovative Youth Justice Group, the Observatory on Human Rights of Children, the Children's Legal Centre Wales.

ASC218 Media, Crime & Criminal Justice

The media is seen as both shaping and reflecting modern culture; it is also the primary public source of information about crime, criminals and criminal justice. This module focuses on some of the key debates surrounding the relationship between media portrayals of crime, and criminal behaviour and criminal justice policy. What impact does the media have on public perceptions and attitudes regarding crime and criminal justice? Or on criminal justice policy-making? Why is crime news reported in the way that it is? Does exposure to violence in the media increase the likelihood of its commission by the viewer? These questions and many others will be addressed as the module explores the portrayal of crime and criminal justice in both factual and fictional formats
ASC303 Critical Challenges in Justice for Children

This module critically explores law, policy, theory and practice that relates to the way that children who are in conflict with the law are treated by the 'youth justice system'. Key foci within the module are: the development of youth justice approaches; the relationship between children's rights and youth justice; challenges to notions of childhood; the impact of devolution; and the influence of global perspectives concerning justice for children on the youth justice system in England and Wales.
ASC339 International Comparative Criminology

This module uses a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) framework to promote an understanding of comparative criminology.¿ This module will be taught in collaboration with Trent University and will involve final year Swansea University students partnering with final year Trent University students to examine and participate in the practice of comparative criminology, critically understand the strengths and weaknesses of the methods and practices involved and explore case study examples of comparative criminology.
SPC109 Foundations in Social Science Research

This module is intended to give students a foundation in research methods that are relevant to the social sciences. Teaching will focus on current issues in criminology and sociology, and, through the module, students will be encouraged to gather and assess a wide range of information from a variety of sources, including books, journal articles, the Internet and the media in order to understand important t themes in the social sciences and the different ways they are presented. The module is intended to be challenging and thought-provoking, providing an opportunity for students to broaden perspectives, deepen understanding of contemporary criminal justice issues and to consolidate and apply research-related skills that they have thus far learnt during their studies.
