Professor Dyson is a molecular microbiologist who leads a research group focussing on exploiting useful bacteria for medicine and biotechnology.

Professor Dyson graduated with a BSc from the University of East Anglia, a PhD from Glasgow University and DSc from Swansea University. His research career included periods in Canada, Germany and France.

His research has led to 4 patents covering areas such as antibiotic-producing soil bacteria, using symbiotic bacteria to silence gene expression in insects, and exploiting tumour-targeting bacteria for both early detection of cancer and delivery of therapeutics.

Professor Dyson contributes to the Genetics and Biochemistry degree schemes. He teaches and co-ordinates a final year module on Animal Development, and contributes to modules on Molecular Microbiology, Human Genetics and Biotechnology. He is an academic mentor for under- and post-graduate students and supervises several undergraduate and masters research projects each year.

PM-226 Human and Medical Genetics

The course is designed to introduce fundamental concepts in the study of human genetics with particular reference to the application of the principles to medicine. The course covers the role of genetics in human health and disease and methods for the detection of genetic variability in human populations.
PM-251 Microbial Molecular Genetics

The control systems governing gene expression in prokaryotic cells are explored and the molecular basis for gene regulation introduced. Practical skills in obtaining and analysing data on a bacterial system are developed. The module then assesses the structure of the bacterial genome and how genetic analysis can be used to investigate structure and function of individual components of that genome. Specific examples explored in depth are the genetics of recombination and DNA repair. The technologies used for functional genomic analysis of fully sequenced bacteria are described with reference to analysis of human pathogens. Finally, the module includes examples of synthetic biology applied to bacteria.
PM-280 Skills for Researchers

The modern scientist graduate is expected to have gained extensive laboratory-based experience and this is certainly essential for any student intent on pursuing a research-based career. Skills for Researchers provides students with the opportunity to acquire the core skills to be able to conduct, analyse, interpret and present scientific experiments. A proportion of the module will be spent in the laboratory gaining hands-on experience. Skills acquired in this module will form the basis for future experimental work, including the final year project. Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback to peers and engage with a variety of online learning materials.
PM-308 Animal Development

The module provides an understanding of the principles of animal development, introducing critical genes and their products that play roles in regulating metazoan development. Classical embryology will be integrated with contemporary molecular investigations into developmental mechanisms.
PM-344 Capstone Project

The aim of this module is to provide a capstone experience to students¿ learning, through participating in their own enquiry-based research project, with guidance from an academic supervisor. The project may be laboratory or non-laboratory based, but it will always involve a research question that is drawn from the literature, and focused on a topic relevant to the life sciences. It will ask a research question and involve the critical analysis of research findings. Students will refine their oral and written communication skills to a graduate level through an oral presentation and dissertation on their research findings and conclusions.
PMRM04 Dissertation (Research)

This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in teaching components in part one of their relevant programme. Students will work independently in order to critically explore and add to the evidence base for a topic of relevance to their area of study.
