Rachel is part of the People and Organisation Group within the School of Management (FHSS). Her main areas of interest are Employment Relations and Strategic HRM. She obtained her PhD from Cardiff University, which focused on workplace wellbeing as a lens to investigate employment relations. She is an Associate Member of the CIPD. She is the Academic Integrity Lead for the School of Management.

MN-1006 Managing People

This module provides students with an introduction to the study of the organisation and management of people. It considers the historical development of people management and critically evaluates principal theoretical approaches to the management of people in organisations. A consideration of the importance of the organisational context is given. The module also discusses key concepts, theories and research related to organising and leading people in organisations and their implications for management practice. In doing so, this module provides the foundations of the study of organisational behaviour and human resource management in Year 2.
MN-M062 Strategic Human Resource Management

The purpose of this module is to apply theoretical understandings of strategic HRM to understand how organisations can maximize value through their people practices. We critically assess the extent to which the alignment of HRM processes to organisational strategy is a source of competitive advantage. Learners explore and evaluate the ways in which key HR issues ¿ such as recruitment and selection, employee development, performance management, and employee engagement ¿ are strategically embedded and contribute to organisational performance. Throughout the module learners will draw on contemporary academic research and organisational practice across local, national, and global contexts to explore this contribution.
MN-M598 Employment Relations and Wellbeing

The purpose of this module is to introduce key aspects of and current developments in the employment relationship. During the module we will discuss issues of perennial importance such as the wage-effort bargain, the indeterminacy of labour power and conflict in the workplace. We will consider the impact of managerial strategies designed to increase worker motivation and how these serve to individualise the workplace and generate dysfunctional outcomes. We will consider HRM as system of people management from this perspective and how it complements or contradicts more traditional systems of people management and its impact on indirect (e.g., trade union) representation. We will also critically evaluate current developments in employee relations in the UK, with a particular focus on employee wellbeing.
