  Science communication is a key skill for scientists. Developing these skills allows students to really digest complicated, often abstract theories ideas and find ways to successfully presenting them to non experts. This improves student¿s own understanding as well as equipping them for the much wider world of science and business. Students will learn how to communicate complex science concepts to different audiences using a variety of techniques. Each session of the course will focus onto different modes of communication and will include theoretical and practical components.

  Partnered with BIO351 Science Communication module, this placement-based module allows students to undertake a communications-based placement to gain real-world experience of scientific communication.

• PH-104 Astronomy and Cosmology

  This module is a basic introduction to Observational Astronomy and Cosmology. It will be given in a non-mathematical style and is intended to inspire and motivate students of any discipline at an early stage in their studies. Opportunities will be given for making practical astronomical observations.

• PH-217 Science Communication

• PH-310 Advanced Astronomical Techniques

  Students will carry out experiments conducted in two weekly 3-hour laboratory sessions on topics related to advanced research themes in Astronomy/Astrophysics.

• PH-325 Teaching Physics via a School Placement

  This module is for students with an interest in entering teaching, and involves a weekly placement in a local school under the mentorship of a physics teacher. The student will engage both in observation and in various teaching activities. The module will be assessed on the basis of the mentor's report and on written project work.

Sarah has over 15 years of experience in outreach and public engagement. She is the Director of Education for the Faulkes Telescope Project, a STEM-based project that aims to enthuse and engage school pupils using Astronomy as the hook. As part of this role she give talks, workshops and CPD to a range of audiences, from schools and teachers to public audiences.

Sarah has engaged in less traditional projects also, such as one which was aimed at bringing science to prisoners via the National Prison Radio. For this project she went into a prison, and was on a panel of experts, talking about space to a group of prisoners.

Sarah regularly presents talks and exhibits at various festivals such as the Cheltenham Science Festival, Swansea Science Festival and the Welsh language Eisteddfodau and Tafwyl festivals.

In her role as Inclusivity lead for the College of Science in Swansea, Sarah regularly give talks and workshops at public events in the local area, and runs a number of social media accounts, promoting outreach projects and inclusive STEM education in general. She gave a Science Café talk, run by the Oriel Science team at Swansea University, on the topic of ‘Death From the Skies’ which followed her successful talk of the same title to 600 school students as part of the University’s Christmas lectures.

Sarah currently has a public engagement grant from the Science Technology & Facilities Research council (STFC) which involves getting school pupils from Wales to search for dust from space.
