• PPS102 Poverty and Plenty

  This module challenges students to think about the relationships between those in need and those with plenty. Themes will include perceptions of poverty, implications of poverty for health and wellbeing, state welfare philanthropy, political and sociological perspectives of poverty and welfare and UK welfare policy.

• PPS108 Introduction to Research in Health and Social Care

  This module provides an introduction to the origins of the most common theoretical perspectives used in health and social care research.

• PPS123 Fundamental Skills for Health and Social Care

  This module provides students with the fundamental skills and knowledge required to provide compassionate, safe, and high-quality care and support applicable across all sectors of health and social care. The module contains theoretical and practical aspects. It explores the meaning of caring, and the professional attributes required to care for others safely. It will give students a basis from which they can further develop their skills and knowledge as they progress through the course, or in their careers.

• PPS205 Safeguarding in Health and Social Care

  This module provides students with theoretical knowledge and understanding of safeguarding within health and social care. This is a broad introduction to safeguarding and will include the development of relevant legal frameworks and guidance and the responsibilities of different professional groups and agencies to work together to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults.

• SHGM104 Nutrition for Public Health Improvement

  The module applies public health and health promotion principles to nutrition. Nutrition is a key element to improving public health. Over-nutrition and under-nutrition are international problems that occur in developed as well as developing nations. The module includes an overview of basic nutrients and requirements through the life-cycle. We will focus on overweight and obesity, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and cancer. Nutritional policies and approaches to public health nutrition on a local, national and international level will be covered. The module develops the nutrition knowledge and skills required by health and social care professions and other interested individuals. Links to relevant sustainable development are made.

• SHGM38 Foundations in Research

  The purpose of this module is to provide a critical understanding of the research process and methodological approaches to sound applied research. The module will be delivered in a systematic approach facilitating individual and group learning, and will stimulate the development of research skills that will enable learners to apply them in their work environment and contribute to strengthening the notion and implementation of evidence based practice.

• SHGM57 Dissertation (MSc Public Health and Health Promotion)

  This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in part one of the programme. Specifically, students will be prepared to work independently in order to critically explore the evidence base for a topic of interest or relevance to their own professional practice.

• SHTM34 Teaching and Learning for the Health Professions' Educators

  This module has been designed to prepare educators from a variety of health professions for a role in teaching, supervising and assessing students and trainees in practice and academic settings. It aims to prepare educators to work within a developmental framework in the context of interprofessional learning and modern day health services. This module will form part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education for the Health Professions.
