MN-1020 The Business of Tourism
Tourism is one of the world¿s largest and fastest growing industries, and it is projected to continue to grow rapidly over the coming decades. This module seeks to provide a broad introduction to travel and tourism, with particular emphasis on the history, and structure and organization, of the tourism industry. Multiple definitions of tourism will be explored, as will the challenges associated with measurement of tourism activity. The historical development of travel and the tourism industry will be traced, and key factors influencing the continued development of the industry today and into the future discussed. The primary sectors that make up the tourism industry will each be investigated (transportation, accommodations, food and beverage, and visitor attractions and events) and the types of organizations and businesses that serve as intermediaries in the provision of tourism opportunities will also be studied (travel agencies, tour operators, and the public sector). Interactive sessions that combine traditional lecture-style presentations with in-class individual or small group activities will be employed. Guest lectures from industry members will be invited as appropriate.
