About

Zoe is a lecturer in Criminology in the department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy. She has taught various modules at the undergraduate level since joining the faculty in 2021 and specialises in gender and gender relations. Zoe is also an Associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Prior to joining Swansea University, Zoe was a doctoral researcher at Cardiff University. Zoe’s doctoral research focused on gender, violence, and embodiment in mixed martial arts (MMA). These themes were central to wider issues surrounding not just the sport but bodies in everyday life, including sexual harassment, boundaries of humour and the liminality of violence in interaction.

Her research and teaching interests include creative methodologies, such as poetry as a form of data analysis and representation.

Zoe teaches on a range of undergraduate levels since joining Swansea University, primarily levels 4 and 5. Her teaching interests involve key sociological issues and theory across undergraduate learning, and more specific discussions on gender and gender relations across social science disciplines.

ASC308 Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice

This module introduces key issues around gender, crime, and the criminal justice system. The module will comprise of 10 lectures, tracing themes from the role of gender in our understanding of offenders and victims, to gender and crime in the media, to toxic masculinity and the normalisation of violence. Throughout the module varied feminist theories of gender and crime, policy debates, and evidence will be considered. Students will be given the opportunity to engage both critically and creatively in response to the variety of topics presented.
ASC333 Critical Criminology of Sports and Leisure

The module reimagines sport as an important critical criminological field that can help us better understand how discourses and practices of crime and justice produce and reinforce social inequalities. The intersections of sport and crime have received much attention from scholars working predominantly in the areas of law and legal studies. For the most part, this body of research has documented cases of corruption, cheating, and illegal behavior that occurs away from the arena and in contexts that fall outside of the direct purview of sport. Criminologists add to this field by considering how crime, deviance, and punishment in the sporting world produce and reproduce social inequalities. This course investigates the myriad ways that ideas, representations, and messages about crime, violence, and punishment in sport mirror broader relations of power that exist outside of sport. Covering a broad range of legal, cultural and social issues such as corruption, cheating, drug-use, doping, violence, and power we consider the role of critical criminology in addressing some of the crimes and harms associated with sport and leisure.
SPC111 The Sociological and Criminological Imagination

This module introduces various theories and concepts around thinking 'sociologically' and 'criminologically'. Over the course of 10 lectures, students will be introduced to the main explanatory theories of crime, deviance and social inequality - assessing the strengths and limitations of each. We will consider the debates of private troubles versus public problems, discussing a range of topical issues to bring these debates to life. The module also examines the relevance of theories and evidence to contemporary policy and practice.
SPC113 Study Skills in Social Sciences

This module introduces students to the basic research and essay writing skills required when studying Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy in Higher Education. A mixture of lecturer-led and independent learning methods will address topics such as efficient use of library services, active reading and note-taking and accurate referencing. Students will develop skills in critical evaluation and higher-order learning.
