Pedagogy

The TEL Dev Team approach considers learners to be central to the educational process. Every learning environment and approach to student support and guidance should begin with a learner-centred pedagogy. Curriculum design should reflect the student user experience. Effective teaching can only take place when there is an appropriate balance between pedagogy, space, and technology. When used without care, technology can sometimes detract from the teaching and learning experience. However, when used carefully to support pedagogy, technology can enhance teaching and learning. This is particularly true when the scope and style of pedagogy change as technology changes, as for example with contemporary pedagogical styles such as ‘hyflex’ learning.

Active Learning

Active learning is a student-centred process which emphasises that the effectiveness of learning is profoundly influenced by how students learn. Students are encouraged to move beyond the passive reception of information from a teacher to engage with learning at a deeper cognitive level. Students are frequently challenged to become independent thinkers, taking ownership of their own learning. Knowledge and understanding are developed in response to the opportunities and expertise provided by their teachers and learning community.

Blended Learning

Blended approaches use multiple methods to deliver learning by combining face-to-face interactions with online activities. The balance between online and face-to-face components and the integration of other methods depends on the needs of learners and the context within which the learning is implemented.

Flipped Learning

Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which the conventional notion of classroom-based learning is inverted so that students are introduced to the learning material before class with classroom time then being used to deepen understanding through discussion with peers and problem-solving activities facilitated by teachers.

Hyflex Learning

HyFlex learning is the term used to describe the simultaneous delivery of face-to-face and online learning. Utilising this approach allows flexibility for the students to attend synchronous sessions in-person or remotely, or to study asynchronously online.

Online Learning

Online learning takes the form of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities which take place via the Internet with no in person contact between students and teachers.
