Critical Thinking
This module introduces students to critical thinking concepts, which can then be applied to the specific programme pathway students are following. Students will learn to evaluate sources and apply criteria of credibility. They will learn how to build a reasoned argument and to justify their position. This is an interactive course which encourages students to develop a critical thinking disposition and a healthy scepticism when considering sources of information.
Contract Law
The module introduces contract law within England and Wales, covering the principles around contract creation, contents of contracts as well as what happens when things go wrong and the associated common law and equitable remedies. It is a highly interactive course in which students are encouraged to apply legal principles to problem-based scenarios and case studies.
Criminal Law
This module provides an introduction to criminal law within England and Wales, outlining the criminal justice system and considering the principles and policies behind the decision to criminalise certain types of behaviour. Crime will be examined from both a conceptual and practical approach. The module will also consider the future direction of the criminal law and reform. It is a highly interactive course in which students are encouraged to apply legal principles to problem-based scenarios and case studies.
Foundations of Law
The module provides an introduction to the legal infrastructure operating within England and Wales and will explore the foundations of what the law seeks to achieve within a democracy. It will consider of the main classifications and sources of law, and an introduction to the function, powers and personnel of the three main institutions of state. In addition it will deliver a study of the Human Rights legislation which seeks to enhance the students’ ability to apply law to a theoretical scenario.
Tort Law
This module introduces a range of torts protecting a variety of different interests in relation to loss. Examples of loss can include physical damage to the body or to property, or interference with land use and enjoyment of land. The module focuses on the fundamental principles of liability with reference to negligence, occupiers' liability and nuisance. The module will also introduce the key principles around defences, limitation, and remedies.
Legal Skills
Research methods and skills are an essential part of being a law student. This module aims to develop students' confidence in research and legal and academic communication embedding their understanding of the application of law. The module will interlink with the other foundation law module and provide the student with the knowledge and ability to utilise academic databases and journals through a series of practical tasks. It is a highly interactive course in which students will learn by doing, developing their skills in reading statutes, judgements, legal journals and academic sources.
English Skills Portfolio
On completion of the English Skills Portfolio Foundation Course, students should have reached a linguistic level appropriate for academic study on their chosen degree scheme at Swansea University. The aim of English Skills Portfolio is to enable students to develop their English language level within an academic context, and to equip students with the linguistic and academic skills necessary to perform confidently within their chosen discipline, whilst simultaneously encouraging them to become effective independent learners.
