Living in the Social World
This module introduces students to a range of key topics, contemporary issues and approaches within the study of humanities, social and life sciences. It offers the opportunity to engage with key debates, theories and literature within humanities, social and life science disciplines, and to develop a foundational understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the field. It also provides a broad introduction to research concepts, design and skills in the discipline.
Understanding Society
This module introduces students to the core principles of sociology, focusing on the application of the sociological imagination to analyse and understand society. It will examine the distinctive questions that subjects such as Sociology, Social Sciences and Social Policy ask about human society and some of the key concepts and tools we use in tackling those questions, developing critical thinking and academic writing skills.
Critical Thinking
This module introduces students to critical thinking concepts, which can then be applied to the specific programme pathway students are following. Students will learn to evaluate sources and apply criteria of credibility. They will learn how to build a reasoned argument and to justify their position. This is an interactive course which encourages students to develop a critical thinking disposition and a healthy scepticism when considering sources of information.
Interactive Learning Skills and Communication
This module has been designed to help students develop their academic literacy and communication skills in preparation for undergraduate study. The module also develops and recognises students’ employability skills through engagement with Swansea University’s Career Development Course.
Research Project
This module provides students with an understanding of fundamental concepts and methods in research design. It builds on the semester one module ‘Living in the Social World’ by providing students the opportunity to apply what they have learnt through conducting independent research on a discipline-specific topic within Humanities, Social and Life Sciences.
Welfare Across the Globe
This module provides an in-depth exploration of welfare systems, welfare problems, and the global factors that shape them. It examines the theories and models of welfare states, the impact of globalisation, and the varied welfare challenges faced by different regions worldwide. Students will engage with both the theoretical underpinnings and the practical aspects of welfare policies, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how welfare issues are addressed on a global scale.
English Skills Portfolio
On completion of the English Skills Portfolio Foundation Course, students should have reached a linguistic level appropriate for academic study on their chosen degree scheme at Swansea University. The aim of English Skills Portfolio is to enable students to develop their English language level within an academic context, and to equip students with the linguistic and academic skills necessary to perform confidently within their chosen discipline, whilst simultaneously encouraging them to become effective independent learners.
